Mentors play an integral role in the growth of our students through constant supportive supervision, mentoring, and facilitating safe engagement in the program's many aspects of outdoor adventure. Adventure opportunities include backpacking, rock climbing, canoeing, and mountain biking, where students are able to practice problem solving and self-reliance, along with all of the backcountry skills introduced on campus. While on campus you will guide our students as they attend classes and build life skills by cooking in our commercial kitchen, cleaning their living space, gardening, practicing yoga and implementing daily mindfulness routines.
Ignite Adulthood is a campus-based adventure therapy program designed exclusively for struggling young adults ages 18-25 who uncover their trail to success by overcoming new challenges in a safe and supportive environment.
Primary Responsibilities and Tasks:
- Provide supervision to ensure safety and well-being of students.
- Monitor day-to-day health and safety concerns such as physical health, hygiene, and food intake.
- Assist in facilitating valuable experiences for growth and development for students.
- Demonstrate and teach Base and Adventure skills, use of field equipment, gear, and supplies necessary for successful participation in the program.
- Create and follow through with personal goals of growth.
- Maintain calm and supportive demeanor when students are experiencing strong emotions.
- Live on site the days of your shift.
A qualified candidate will meet the following requirements:
- Above the age of 21
- Ability to pass a drug screen and background check
- Willingness to sleep outside if an overnight camping trip is planned during your shift
- Ability to fulfill physical demands of adventure programming from hiking, mountain biking, backpacking, etc.
- Ability to identify, assess, and manage risk in a backcountry setting
- Demonstrates resilience, grit, and adaptive problem solving
- Ability to form healthy relationships with strong boundaries
- Willingness to give and receive growth oriented feedback to and from peers
- Ability to work 7 days on and requires sleeping on campus overnight.
- Ability to work 7/6 schedule (7 consecutive full days of work followed by 6 days off!)
You're a step ahead if you have experience with the following (but will train you if you don't!):
- Experience in outdoor recreation such as backpacking, hiking, camping, canoeing, rafting, mountain biking, and/or rock climbing
- Leadership experience, either in a professional or outdoor setting
- Experience working with young people, including setting and holding behavioral limits
- Practice with a regular self-care routine to maintain personal wellness
- Holds a current certification in CPR and First Aid, Wilderness First Aid, or Wilderness First Responder
A 6 month or more commitment is necessary to begin work with Ignite Adulthood. Staff work a shift rotation of 7 days immersed in the program, followed by 6 days off to relax, travel, and adventure. Mentors have room and board provided while on shift. The Mentor role has often been called “the hardest job you’ll ever love”; it requires a firm commitment to compassion, a desire to effect positive change in the lives of young people, and the ability to be a resilient problem solver.
