We are seeking an experienced Chemistry Department Manager to lead our chemistry operations, oversee method compliance, manage laboratory personnel, and support continued growth of our environmental and food chemistry testing programs.
Position Summary
The Chemistry Department Manager will be responsible for the technical and operational leadership of the chemistry laboratory. This individual will oversee test methods used for environmental water and wastewater analysis under Pennsylvania DEP and TNI requirements, Vitamin A and Vitamin D testing for Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture programs, and food chemistry analyses used for nutritional labeling and product quality evaluation.
The successful candidate will serve as the laboratory's technical leader for chemistry operations, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations, accreditation requirements, quality systems, and client expectations.
Essential Responsibilities
Laboratory Management
- Manage day-to-day operations of the chemistry department.
- Supervise, train, mentor, and evaluate chemistry laboratory personnel.
- Ensure adherence to laboratory quality systems, SOPs, safety programs, and accreditation requirements.
- Schedule laboratory workload and allocate resources to meet turnaround time commitments.
- Investigate analytical issues and implement corrective actions when required.
Technical Responsibilities
- Oversee environmental chemistry testing for water and wastewater samples using DEP and TNI-compliant methods.
- Maintain technical oversight of inorganic, nutrient, and environmental chemistry analyses.
- Direct Vitamin A and Vitamin D testing programs in accordance with Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture requirements.
- Manage food chemistry testing including but not limited to:
- Moisture
- Fat
- Protein
- Salt
- Bone analysis
- Calcium
- Nitrite
- Nitrate
- Ash and other nutritional components
- Oversee analyses utilized for FDA Nutrition Facts label generation.
- Review and approve analytical data and reports.
- Ensure proper calibration, maintenance, and performance verification of laboratory instrumentation.
Quality and Compliance
- Maintain compliance with:
- TNI accreditation requirements
- Pennsylvania DEP requirements
- Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture requirements
- ISO/IEC 17025 quality standards
- FDA regulatory requirements as applicable
- Participate in internal and external audits.
- Develop, validate, verify, and implement analytical methods.
- Review quality control data and take corrective actions when necessary.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Food Science, Environmental Science, Biochemistry, or related scientific field (minimum of 24 credits in chemistry required).
- Minimum 2 years of analytical chemistry laboratory experience; 5 years preferred.
- Minimum 1 year of supervisory or management experience; 3 years preferred.
- Experience with environmental water and wastewater testing.
- Strong understanding of laboratory quality systems and accreditation requirements.
- Demonstrated experience with method validation, troubleshooting, and quality control.
Preferred
- Experience operating under TNI and/or ISO 17025 accreditation.
- Experience with FDA nutritional labeling analyses.
- Experience with HPLC, ICP-OES, ICP-MS, UV-Vis spectroscopy, titration systems, and other analytical instrumentation.
- Familiarity with LIMS systems and laboratory workflow management.
