Job Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented and knowledgeable Pathology Coding Specialist to join our healthcare team. The Medical Coder will be responsible for accurately coding pathology reports and ensuring proper reimbursement for services rendered. This role requires a strong understanding of medical terminology, CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS coding systems, as well as familiarity with pathology procedures and billing practices. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, possess excellent analytical skills, and thrive in a fast-paced environment. This contract role offers the potential for full-time employment based on performance and company needs.
Responsibilities
- Review and analyze pathology reports to assign appropriate CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS codes.
- Ensure accurate coding and documentation to support billing and reimbursement.
- Stay up to date with coding guidelines, regulations, and payer requirements, including NCCI edits and LCDs.
- Research and resolve coding discrepancies and denials.
- Communicate effectively with physicians, lab staff, and billing personnel to clarify documentation and coding issues.
- Maintain coding accuracy and productivity standards as established by the company.
- Assist with special projects and other duties as assigned.
- Maintain patient confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
- Collaborate with the billing team to ensure timely and accurate claim submissions
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.
- Current and valid coding certification (e.g., CPC, CCS) preferred
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in medical coding required.
- Experience in pathology setting preferred.
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
- Proficiency in CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS coding systems.
- Familiarity with pathology procedures and terminology.
- Understanding of billing processes and reimbursement methodologies.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in using electronic health record (EHR) and practice management systems.
- Detail-oriented and highly organized.
