Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced Surgery Counselor to join our team. This role is vital in guiding patients through the surgical process, ensuring they understand their options, coordinating preoperative and postoperative care, and facilitating a seamless surgical experience. The ideal candidate must have prior experience in ophthalmology or a related healthcare field.
Key Responsibilities:
- Educate patients on surgical procedures, including cataract surgery, intraocular lens options (monofocal, toric, extended depth of focus, trifocal), and laser-assisted surgery.
- Review financial responsibilities with patients, including insurance coverage, self-pay options, and financing programs.
- Coordinate surgery scheduling with the surgeon, patient, and surgical facility, ensuring all necessary paperwork and preoperative requirements are met.
- Obtain prior authorizations and verify insurance coverage for surgical procedures.
- Explain and obtain informed consent for surgery and related procedures.
- Provide preoperative and postoperative instructions, addressing patient concerns and ensuring they understand the recovery process.
- Maintain accurate and organized patient records within the electronic medical record (EMR) system.
- Communicate with referring doctors, answering questions about patient surgical plans.
- Assist in MIPS/quality initiative documentation to ensure compliance with surgical standards.
- Work closely with the clinical team to optimize patient flow and enhance the overall patient experience.
Qualifications:
- Must have prior experience as a surgery counselor, ophthalmic technician, or in a related role within ophthalmology or healthcare.
- Strong knowledge of cataract surgery and intraocular lens options.
- Experience with insurance verification, prior authorizations, and self-pay financial discussions.
- Proficiency in electronic medical records (EMR) and medical documentation.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain complex medical procedures in a patient-friendly manner.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- COA or COT certification is a plus.
- Experience with MIPS documentation and surgical quality reporting.
- Prior experience in a high-volume ophthalmology practice.
