Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced and safety-focused Excavator Operator to join our growing team. This position plays a key role in supporting daily warehouse operations and ensuring accurate, timely shipment of automotive parts. The ideal candidate will have experience managing heavy equipment, sorting scrap metal, loading/unloading materials, and maintaining a clean and safe yard environment. Knowledge of automobile parts or mechanical components is strongly preferred. Familiarity with ferrous vs. non-ferrous materials is preferred.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate excavators safely and efficiently to move, load, and sort scrap metal and recyclable parts.
- Use attachments such as grapples, buckets, or magnets to handle various materials; removing wiring, alternators, a/c compressors and engines from vehicles.
- Conduct routine maintenance checks on equipment to ensure optimal performance.
- Unload scrap vehicles, load trucks, containers, and processing equipment with precision.
- Assist in the transportation of materials using a loader.
- Assist in breaking down or separating metal components as needed.
- Conduct routine maintenance checks on equipment to ensure optimal performance.
- Follow all company, OSHA, and equipment safety procedures.
- Sort incoming scrap metal and automotive parts by type, material, and condition.
- Move materials throughout the yard to designated areas for processing, storage, or resale.
- Communicate load requirements with yard staff and drivers.
Qualifications
- Must have valid driver’s license.
- Must have own vehicle.
- Proven experience operating an excavator (must have a minimum 1 year, –2 years preferred).
- Ability to safely operate heavy machinery in a busy scrap yard environment.
- Strong awareness of surroundings and commitment to safety.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.).
- Effective communication skills and the ability to follow instructions.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit for extended periods while operating equipment.
- Ability to lift 50-75 lbs. as needed and work in a physically active environment (i.e., standing for extended periods of time, bending, and stooping).
- Work performed outdoors in hot, cold, or inclement weather.
