JOB TITLE: Personal Trainer
REPORTS TO: Program Director and/or as assigned
FLSA TYPE: Non-Exempt, Hourly
JOB PURPOSE:
The Personal Trainer delivers safe, effective, and engaging one-on-one and small-group training services in alignment with YMCA values and nationally recognized certification standards. This role is responsible for client acquisition, program design, instruction, and ongoing member engagement while supporting overall wellness goals. Personal Trainers serve as educators, motivators, and trusted fitness professionals who promote healthy lifestyles and YMCA programs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (not a complete list):

Provide safe, effective, and individualized personal training sessions based on client goals, assessments, and certification standards

Conduct fitness assessments and interpret results to create appropriate exercise programs

Maintain constant visual supervision of clients to ensure proper technique and safety

Actively generate, cultivate, and retain clients through consultations, follow-ups, and member engagement

Meet or exceed monthly sales goals through professional promotion of personal training services

Educate and motivate clients to support long-term adherence to healthy lifestyles

Accurately document client sessions, assessments, progress notes, and scheduling activity

Maintain a clean, safe, and professional training environment on the wellness floor

Learn and utilize YMCA member management and sales systems to track sessions and revenue

Communicate professionally with members when scheduling consultations and sessions

Adhere to YMCA dress code, conduct standards, and safety procedures

Collaborate with other trainers to foster teamwork and departmental success

Maintain all required certifications and complete continuing education as required

Attend staff meetings, trainings, and continuing education sessions as assigned

Adhere to all organizational policies and procedures regarding the prevention of abuse.

Report any suspected abuse, neglect, or misconduct immediately to the appropriate supervisory staff.

Attend mandatory training on abuse prevention, including recognizing signs of abuse, and reporting requirements.

Required:
-
Must be at least 18 years of age
-
Current nationally recognized CPT certification (ACSM, ACE, NSCA, ISSA, AFAA, NASM, NETA, NESTA, IFPA)

Current CPR, First Aid, and Oxygen Certification (will provide upon hire)

Minimum of one year of experience in fitness instruction, program design, and/or personal training

Demonstrated ability to conduct assessments, design programs, and coach individuals of varying ages and fitness levels

Proven ability to sell and retain personal training clients

Strong knowledge of exercise science principles, injury prevention, and emergency response
-
Ability to interpret assessment results and present plans clearly to clients

Strong verbal communication and customer service skills

Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science or a related field
