CAL Sports Academy is seeking positive, dependable, and enthusiastic Assistant Youth Basketball Coaches to join our coaching team.
This position is designed for individuals who already understand the game of basketball but may still be developing their coaching and teaching experience.
Current and former college basketball players, former high school or AAU players, education students, recent graduates, and developing coaches are encouraged to apply.
Extensive coaching experience is not required. Basketball playing experience is required.

Position Overview
As an Assistant Youth Basketball Coach, you will work alongside CAL Sports Academy coaches to provide organized, engaging, and age appropriate basketball instruction for athletes ages 6 to 18.
This is a developmental coaching position. You will have opportunities to learn how to teach fundamentals, demonstrate skills, organize drills, manage groups, communicate with athletes, and become a more effective youth coach.
Assistant coaches are not expected to independently lead programs immediately.
Responsibilities
As an Assistant Youth Basketball Coach, you will:
- Assist lead coaches with basketball classes, clinics, camps, leagues, training programs, and other youth programming.
- Help teach fundamentals including ball handling, passing, shooting, footwork, finishing, defense, rebounding, movement, and basic game concepts.
- Demonstrate basketball skills and drills.
- Provide encouragement, instruction, and constructive feedback to athletes.
- Help keep athletes engaged and active throughout practices and classes.
- Work with athletes of different ages and skill levels.
- Reinforce instruction provided by the lead coach.
- Assist with equipment setup and breakdown.
- Help maintain a positive, safe, organized, and encouraging environment.
- Communicate professionally with athletes, parents, coaches, and staff.
- Arrive prepared and on time for assigned programs.
- Participate in coach development and training.
- Represent CAL Sports Academy with professionalism, enthusiasm, and integrity.
Required Qualifications
Applicants must:
- Have previous basketball playing experience.
- Have a basic understanding of basketball fundamentals and terminology.
- Enjoy working with children and teenagers.
- Be willing to learn how to teach and coach youth athletes.
- Be dependable, punctual, and professional.
- Communicate effectively and positively.
- Be willing to receive instruction, feedback, and coaching.
- Work effectively as part of a coaching team.
- Be able to reliably commute to CAL Sports Academy program locations.
- Be authorized to work in the United States.
- Be willing and able to obtain all required Pennsylvania background clearances before beginning employment.
Preferred Qualifications
We are especially interested in candidates with:
- High school, AAU, prep, or collegiate basketball playing experience.
- Previous experience helping younger athletes learn basketball.
- Experience working with children through sports, camps, schools, recreation programs, childcare, mentoring, or youth organizations.
- Education, Physical Education, Exercise Science, Recreation, Coaching, or Sports Management experience.
- CPR and First Aid certification.
- An interest in developing into a lead basketball coach.
Previous formal coaching experience is helpful, but not required.
Schedule
Our primary coaching needs are:
Monday through Friday: Approximately 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM
Saturdays: Approximately 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, depending on programming and enrollment.
You do not need to be available every day. We are looking for candidates who can consistently commit to specific days each week.
Hours will vary based on program enrollment, availability, qualifications, and organizational needs.
Compensation and Development
$15.00 to $20.00 per hour, based on basketball experience, experience working with children, teaching ability, coaching experience, and overall fit.
Assistant coaches who demonstrate the ability to independently teach and lead CAL Sports Academy programs may become eligible for advancement to a Youth Basketball Coach position with a higher compensation range.
