The Crescent Academy is growing and seeking an energetic, knowledgeable, and student-centered Physical Education / Health Teacher to serve students in our Elementary and Middle School programs.
We are looking for an educator who can help students develop physical literacy, healthy habits, confidence, teamwork, self-discipline, and a positive lifelong relationship with movement and personal wellness. The successful candidate will create an inclusive program in which students of varied abilities can participate safely, learn new skills, and experience meaningful progress.
The teacher will prepare and deliver developmentally appropriate instruction aligned with New York State Physical Education and Health Learning Standards, the Academy's approved curriculum, and school values. This is primarily a part-time position, with the possibility of additional teaching or school-support responsibilities based on the candidate's qualifications and the Academy's needs.
Key Responsibilities
Physical Education Curriculum & Instruction
- Develop and deliver well-organized, standards-aligned physical education lessons using the Academy's approved curriculum, available facilities, instructional resources, and grade-level expectations.
- Teach fundamental movement patterns, motor skills, coordination, balance, agility, spatial awareness, physical fitness, and sport-related skills through developmentally appropriate instruction.
- Provide a varied program that may include individual and team activities, cooperative games, fitness development, rhythmic movement, recreational activities, and lifetime physical activities.
- Teach rules, strategies, safe participation, sportsmanship, teamwork, leadership, perseverance, and respectful competition.
- Use demonstrations, guided practice, skill progressions, stations, small-group instruction, and age-appropriate challenges to keep students actively engaged and learning.
Health & Wellness Education
- Plan and teach age-appropriate health lessons aligned with the Academy's approved curriculum, New York State learning standards, and the developmental needs of elementary and middle-school students.
- Provide instruction in areas such as personal wellness, physical activity, nutrition, hygiene, safety, injury prevention, healthy decision-making, social and emotional well-being, and responsible health practices.
- Help students evaluate health information, recognize healthy choices, communicate respectfully, set personal wellness goals, and understand how daily habits affect long-term well-being.
- Present sensitive or developmental health topics professionally and in a manner consistent with the Academy's approved curriculum, family communication expectations, and school values.
Inclusive & Adapted Instruction
- Differentiate instruction so students with varying skill levels, physical abilities, learning needs, confidence levels, and prior experiences can participate meaningfully and make progress.
- Implement appropriate accommodations, modifications, medical limitations, Individualized Education Program provisions, and student-support plans communicated by authorized school personnel.
- Offer alternative activities or adjusted levels of challenge when needed while preserving instructional goals, student dignity, and safe participation.
- Promote an environment in which effort, improvement, teamwork, and personal growth are valued alongside performance.
Safety, Supervision & Equipment
- Provide active, attentive supervision and maintain clear routines for safe movement, equipment use, transitions, entrances, exits, and emergency response.
- Inspect instructional spaces and equipment before use and promptly report hazards, damage, maintenance needs, injuries, or safety concerns.
- Teach and consistently reinforce appropriate safety procedures, boundaries, warm-up and cool-down practices, and responsible use of facilities and equipment.
- Set up, organize, inventory, clean, and store physical education and health instructional equipment and supplies.
- Respond appropriately to student injuries or health concerns, follow school reporting procedures, and work within the scope of the teacher’s training and certification.
Assessment & Student Progress
- Use observation, skill checks, performance tasks, written work, discussions, fitness or wellness reflections, and other appropriate assessments to monitor student learning.
- Evaluate students fairly based on demonstrated learning, preparation, participation, effort, growth, skill development, and understanding of course expectations.
- Maintain accurate attendance, grades, assessment results, accommodations, incident documentation, and student progress records.
- Provide timely, specific, and encouraging feedback that helps students recognize strengths, set goals, improve skills, and take greater ownership of their health and physical development.
- Prepare progress reports, report-card information, and other required academic documentation accurately and on schedule.
Learning Environment & Student Support
- Create and maintain a safe, orderly, inclusive, respectful, and encouraging learning environment in gymnasium, classroom, outdoor, and other instructional settings.
- Establish clear expectations and use constructive, age-appropriate, and consistent classroom-management practices.
- Model and reinforce kindness, patience, fairness, honesty, responsibility, self-control, teamwork, and respect for classmates, opponents, facilities, and equipment.
- Recognize individual student needs and collaborate with school leadership, families, classroom teachers, and support staff to implement appropriate academic, behavioral, or physical supports.
- Maintain professional boundaries, protect student confidentiality, and promote the safety and well-being of every child.
Family Communication & Professional Responsibilities
- Communicate regularly and professionally with parents or guardians regarding student progress, participation, strengths, concerns, required materials, medical limitations, and opportunities for support.
- Participate in parent conferences, staff meetings, professional-development activities, curriculum work, school planning, and required training.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers and school leadership to coordinate schedules, reinforce wellness goals, and support students across the school program.
- Reflect on instructional effectiveness, use feedback constructively, and pursue ongoing professional growth in physical education, health education, safety, and student development.
- Follow the Academy's policies, procedures, curriculum expectations, supervision requirements, and standards of professional conduct.
Enrichment & School Community
- Support or organize fitness initiatives, intramural activities, field days, wellness challenges, clubs, assemblies, and other student-enrichment experiences as assigned.
- Assist with school events, field trips, community-building activities, and other reasonable responsibilities connected to the role.
- Support The Crescent Academy's mission and help maintain a school culture that values academic growth, healthy living, kindness, patience, justice, responsibility, and respect.
Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated knowledge of physical education and health concepts appropriate for elementary and middle-school students.
- Ability to plan standards-aligned instruction, demonstrate physical skills safely, assess student learning, manage active learning environments, and respond to varied student needs.
- Ability to supervise students attentively and maintain safe, structured, and inclusive instruction in indoor and outdoor settings.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate professionally with students, families, colleagues, and school leadership.
- Reliability, punctuality, sound judgment, organization, flexibility, positive energy, and consistent professional follow-through.

- Ability to successfully complete all applicable background checks, clearances, reference verification, and employment requirements for work in a school setting.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, Health Education, Education, Kinesiology, Exercise Science, or a related field.
- At least one year of teaching, coaching, student-teaching, youth-program, recreation, or other structured instructional experience.
- New York State Physical Education teaching certification or another relevant teaching credential.
- Experience teaching both elementary and middle-school students in a private, public, charter, religious, recreation, or other structured educational setting.
- Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certification, or willingness to obtain and maintain approved certification promptly after hire.
- Training or experience in adapted physical education, inclusive instruction, student fitness, health education, injury prevention, or social-emotional learning.
Physical Requirements
The position requires active participation and supervision in physical education settings. The employee must be able to perform the following essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation:
- Stand, walk, move, bend, reach, kneel, and remain active for extended portions of the workday.
- Demonstrate or explain age-appropriate movement, exercise, sport, and fitness skills safely.
- Set up, move, carry, and store balls, mats, cones, goals, nets, and other instructional equipment and supplies.
