Education
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
ExperienceMandatory Qualifications
- Minimum of four (4) years of progressive accounting experience, including at least one (1) year in a supervisory or lead role.
- Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and financial reporting principles.
- Proficiency with accounting software.
- Experience preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for management/CFO review.
- Experience monitoring budget vs. actual expenditures and preparing variance analysis.
- Experience maintaining general ledger accuracy and completing account reconciliations.
- Experience overseeing accounts payable and accounts receivable functions.
- Experience reviewing and approving journal entries, reconciliations, and accounting transactions.
- Experience ensuring proper coding of transactions to general ledger accounts and grant/project codes.
- Experience providing payroll oversight and ensuring payroll compliance with federal, state, and local requirements.
- Experience coordinating annual audits, preparing audit schedules, organizing supporting documentation, and addressing audit recommendations.
- Experience supporting regulatory reporting and compliance activities.
- Experience supervising accounting staff, assigning work, reviewing work, and ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage competing priorities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Microsoft Dynamics.
- Experience with public sector, transit, or grant accounting.
- Familiarity with MnDOT, WisDOT, or National Transit Database (NTD) reporting.
Job Responsibilities
- Oversee day-to-day accounting operations for the Duluth Transit Authority.
- Ensure the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of financial records.
- Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for management and the CFO.
- Monitor actual expenditures against approved budgets and report variances with analysis.
- Maintain the integrity of the general ledger and ensure all accounts are properly reconciled.
- Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable activities performed by accounting staff.
- Review and approve journal entries, reconciliations, and other accounting transactions.
- Ensure transactions are properly coded to general ledger accounts and grant/project codes.
- Supervise the Payroll Accountant in accurate and timely payroll processing.
- Ensure payroll activities comply with applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors.
- Prepare and organize supporting documentation and schedules required for the annual audit.
- Implement audit recommendations and ensure findings are addressed timely.
- Prepare and submit required reports to MnDOT, WisDOT, and the National Transit Database.
- Ensure compliance with applicable federal transit regulations and reporting requirements.
- Directly supervise the Payroll Accountant and Accounting Clerk.
- Provide coaching, work direction, performance feedback, and professional support to accounting staff.
- Assign and review work to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and adherence to established procedures.
- Work closely with the CFO on budgeting, audit coordination, and regulatory compliance.
- Perform work in accordance with GAAP and applicable federal and state requirements.
Pay: $62,826.87 - $75,662.47 per year
