Experience with seamless repeats is helpful but can be taught. The role may also include occasional design development and preproduction support for select client collections.

What You’ll Learn at Advanced
This role offers hands-on experience with the development and production process behind custom wallpaper and textile collections for leading interior designers, artists, and design studios.
- Learn how original, hand-painted, vintage, and digitally created artwork is translated into printed textiles, wallcoverings, and custom products.
- Develop specialized skills in color matching, colorway development, artwork preparation, seamless repeats, separations, strike-off review, and production-ready files.
- Gain practical experience with both hand-screen and digital printing, including how inks, substrates, scale, and production methods affect the final result.
- Work closely with experienced creative and production leaders while building technical knowledge applicable to textiles, wallpaper, home décor, surface design, and print production.
Core Responsibilities
Color Development, Matching & Sample Review
- Create and revise textile and wallpaper colorways based on client direction, feedback, and approved references, including printed samples, strike-offs, fabric, paint chips, Pantone colors, and other inspiration.
- Adjust hue, value, saturation, contrast, and overall color balance while preserving the integrity of the original artwork.
- Compare strike-offs and printed samples to approved references and digital files, noting needed color, artwork, scale, or repeat corrections.
- Document revisions and approvals clearly, maintain consistency across substrates and production methods, and organize physical and digital color references.
Artwork Preparation & File Cleanup
- Scan, clean, edit, and prepare artwork according to client and Creative Director direction, whether preserving the character of hand-painted artwork or refining it into a cleaner, more graphic style.
- Remove dust, stray marks, gaps, scanning issues, and unwanted artifacts while maintaining the integrity of the original design.
- Resize, crop, straighten, and organize files at the correct resolution, scale, dimensions, color mode, and layer structure.
- Prepare alternate layouts, scales, color options, and final artwork for screen and digital printing workflows.
Repeats, Layouts & Scale
- Create, revise, and test seamless repeats, correcting visible seams, spacing issues, awkward motif placement, and unwanted striping.
- Adjust artwork scale and prepare multiple scale options based on client direction, production requirements, and intended end use.
- Rework original or vintage artwork into clean, color-separated repeat files that can move accurately into production.
Print Production Support
- Prepare production-ready files for hand-screen and digital printing, including accurate dimensions, repeats, margins, layers, color, and selvage information.
- Learn and support color separations, channels, spot colors, grayscale and bitmap files, and other layered production requirements.
- Review artwork and print files to catch errors, identify potential print-quality issues, and help determine the appropriate production method.
- Support the production team with artwork questions, color revisions, file updates, troubleshooting, and organized production notes.
Design Support
- As needed, assist with design revisions, motif cleanup, layout concepts, and the creation of simple original artwork, textures, or supporting elements.
- Prepare colorway presentations, mockups, and client-facing visuals that translate creative direction into clear, production-appropriate options.
- Occasionally gather historical, interiors, color, and client-specific visual references to support layout development and presentations without directly copying existing artwork.
File & Project Organization
- Maintain accurate digital files, folders, naming systems, project notes, versions, and production information.
- Organize active projects, artwork archives, client files, samples, color references, and other visual assets so materials are easy to locate and use.
- Prepare and update specification sheets, colorway sheets, printouts, production information, and presentation materials.
- Track revisions, priorities, and deadlines while recognizing inconsistencies before incorrect or outdated files move forward.
Communication & Collaboration
- Communicate clearly with clients, the Owner and Director of Color and Production, Creative Director, production team, and other designers, keeping the appropriate people updated on progress, questions, issues, and file status.
- Ask thoughtful questions when instructions, color direction, or production details are unclear, and apply feedback accurately.
- Manage multiple projects and shifting priorities while respecting client artwork, timelines, confidentiality, and creative direction.
- Remain open to learning new processes, techniques, and production constraints, and apply new knowledge consistently to future projects.
Required Skills
- A highly sensitive eye for color, with the ability to recognize subtle differences in hue, value, saturation, contrast, and overall balance.
- Strong understanding of color theory and color relationships as they apply to printed artwork.
- Strong working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, including layers, masks, selections, adjustment layers, channels, resolution, and organized file construction; familiarity with Adobe Illustrator and basic vector artwork.
- Proficiency in cleaning, editing, recoloring, and preparing artwork at the correct size, resolution, scale, and color mode.
- Understanding of composition, spacing, scale, and seamless repeats, with the ability to recognize visual inconsistencies and technical file issues.
- A sophisticated visual sensibility aligned with luxury interiors, wallpaper, textiles, and surface design.
- Strong organization, reliability, time management, and attention to detail, including consistent use of file-naming, folder, versioning, and production systems.
- Clear communication, patience with detailed revisions, openness to feedback, and a willingness to ask questions rather than guess.
- Comfort working in Photoshop for extended periods and completing careful, repetitive, accuracy-focused production work.
Preferred Qualifications
- Degree, certificate, or relevant coursework in textile design, surface design, illustration, graphic design, fine art, printmaking, or a related field.
- Up to two years of related professional experience. Relevant internships, freelance projects, and strong student work will be fully considered.
- Experience creating seamless repeats, colorways, production-ready artwork, mockups, or client-facing presentation materials.
- Experience scanning, cleaning, and preparing original artwork while preserving the character of hand-drawn or hand-painted work.
- Familiarity with wallpaper, fabric, interiors, home décor, and the visual standards of the luxury design market.
- Familiarity with screen printing, digital printing, printmaking, prepress, Pantone systems, paint references, or other physical color and print-production processes.
- Traditional drawing, painting, illustration, printmaking, or other hand-rendering skills.
- Experience with Excel, Google Sheets, or other project-tracking tools is helpful but not required.
Portfolio & Application Requirements
Applicants should submit a resume and portfolio that includes relevant examples of:

- Strong color development, ideally including at least one design shown in multiple colorways.
- Seamless repeats, stripes, plaids, borders, engineered layouts, or other pattern applications.
- Photoshop-based artwork preparation, digital cleanup, illustration, painting, printmaking, or other work that demonstrates careful craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Selected candidates may be invited to complete a short paid skills exercise involving color adjustment, artwork cleanup, repeat evaluation, or another production-related task.
