Position Summary & Responsibilities
Position Summary: Monitors overall facility safety and security to ensure efficiency and effectiveness. Ensures health, housekeeping, and safety standards are maintained in each living unit through personal observations and through working with Juvenile Corrections staff. Ensures residents have a safe environment by monitoring staffing patterns and making adjustments where necessary. Conducts inspections of personnel on assigned shifts to examine alertness, outward behavior, and appearance of staff, noting deficiencies and corrective action needed. Ensure all security staff work to maintain discipline and control of residents in their living units, at meals, in classrooms, at work sites, during activities and programs, and while they are being escorted throughout the facility and off facility grounds as necessary. Also, direct the systematic, routine and random shakedowns of juvenile residents and facility grounds. Identifies problems, proposes recommendations and supervises implementations of changes in security methods and procedures. Ensure the Special Operations and Response Team, S.O.R.T. is adequately trained and prepared to respond to emergency calls and actions. Respond to facility/unit emergency and crisis situations utilizing the appropriate contingency plans.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
Follows and sets an example for JCO (Juvenile Correctional Officer) staff by observing the Code of Ethics while avoiding any behaviors that could be damaging to the team and facility harmony. Instructs and develops subordinate supervisors in the appropriate management of personnel including supervisory communication skills, motivational techniques, rewarding of employees, enforcement of policies and procedures, progressive discipline, staff scheduling, management of overtime, etc. Maintains knowledge of current trends and actions within the juvenile corrections arena and proactively makes changes to improve operations. Provides direct supervision to the Captains. Provides indirect supervision to all Juvenile Corrections Officer III’s (Lieutenants), Juvenile Corrections Officer II’s (Sergeants), and Juvenile Corrections Officer I’s. Uses established supervisory practices in managing the uniformed security staff. Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual activity summary reports for the Juvenile Corrections Division. Establish a positive and constructive relationship with all departments while maintaining teamwork among the entire Juvenile Corrections ranks.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: 4 years in a correctional setting. Management/ supervision of an agency department for a minimum of 3 years.
Preferred Qualifications: Specific work experience in juvenile corrections and confinement trends and best practices.

Free of conviction or adjudication by a court of law or court-martial, of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year (whether the sentence was imposed or not).

Free of conviction as an adult of Driving Under the Influence (or comparable law regarding driving while intoxicated or under the influence of a controlled substance) in the past 24 months, as an adult or juvenile.

Free of conviction or adjudication of a misdemeanor involving drug use or possession in the past 60 months

Free of any criminal charges, indictments or outstanding warrants pending.

Candidate must take and pass a drug screening test approved by Office of Personnel Services.
