Position Summary
At Dowell Express, the Backhaul Coordinator is a key driver of daily execution and service performance. This role is responsible for coordinating our asset-based fleet across the US, ensuring drivers are set up for success, freight is delivered on time, and customers receive consistent, high-quality service.
This position requires someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, communicates effectively with drivers, and can make real-time decisions to keep operations running smoothly.
Key Responsibilities
- Search and secure backhauls for our drivers
- Dispatch and assign loads to company drivers and owner-operators based on availability, HOS, and route optimization
- Manage day-to-day fleet operations across regional lanes with a focus on service, efficiency, and profitability
- Monitor all loads in transit using Alvys TMS and Samsara ELD/GPS tracking
- Maintain proactive communication with drivers to ensure on-time pickups/deliveries and resolve issues quickly
- Adjust routes and schedules in real-time due to traffic, delays, breakdowns, or customer changes
- Ensure compliance with DOT regulations and Hours of Service (HOS) requirements
- Work closely with safety and maintenance teams to address equipment or driver-related issues
- Communicate with customers and brokers to provide updates, ETAs, and resolve service concerns
- Maximize fleet utilization and reduce empty miles through smart planning and backhaul coordination
- Support onboarding of new drivers by training them on dispatch expectations, communication standards, and company processes
Qualifications
- 1–3+ years of dispatching or transportation experience (asset-based trucking preferred)
- Strong understanding of HOS, DOT compliance, and trucking operations
- Experience with TMS systems (Alvys preferred) and GPS tracking tools (Samsara a plus)
- Strong communication skills with the ability to build relationships with drivers
- Ability to multitask, prioritize, and make decisions under pressure
- High attention to detail and strong organizational skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Teams)

Work Environment
