Richard Grubb & Associates (RGA) is seeking a Project Archaeologist for its Tennessee branch office in Nashville. Projects will be primarily in Tennessee and the Mid-South region. RGA has an immediate need for archaeological support for infrastructure projects administered by the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT). This position will assist with preparing technical reports with some fieldwork requiring overnight travel.
Project Archaeologist responsibilities include:
- Ensure that projects comply with local, state, and federal cultural resources regulations, including Section 106 of National Historic Preservation Act;
- Conduct literature reviews and background research;
- Organize and conduct field surveys;
- Identify archaeological sites and evaluate their eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places;
- Prepare survey site documentation, including site forms for the Tennessee Division of Archaeology (TDOA);
- Prepare technical reports as primary author in collaboration with Project Managers and Principal Investigators;
- Collaborate closely with architectural historians, especially for historic archaeological sites such as buildings, Civil War sites, and linear Native American removal routes; and
- Review and maintain quality control of all field and artifact data.
Qualified applicants must possess:
- Master’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or closely related field;
- Minimum of five years of experience in cultural resources management;
- Communication and problem-solving skills;
- Ability to collaborate closely with a staff team;
- Experience in identifying, documenting, and evaluating pre-contact and historic artifacts, cultural features, and archaeological sites;
- A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation;
- Ability and willingness to travel;
- The position may require the candidate to traverse up to 10 miles per day for fieldwork and frequently move equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.
The preferred candidate will have:
- In-depth knowledge of environmental and archaeological procedures for agencies in Tennessee, including TDOT, TDOA, and Tennessee State Historic Preservation Office (TN-SHPO);
- Experience interfacing with staff at the TDOT, TDOA, and TN-SHPO;
- Experience working in the private consultant environment;
- Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously while keeping the project within budget and on schedule; and
- Experience using handheld GPS equipment.
This is a full-time overtime exempt position and compensation includes a complete benefits package. Salary range is $60,000—70,000 commensurate with experience. Benefits include paid vacation, sick leave, and holidays; group medical, dental, and vision insurance; and a 401k plan with employer match.
