JOB
Care for animals impounded at the Animal Control Shelter.

REPORTS TO: Animal Shelter Operations Supervisor
POSITIONS SUPERVISED: None
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES 1. Clean and disinfect kennels and feed the animals according to established schedules and procedures.
2. Evaluate animals for health and temperament, tend to minor injuries, and administer prescribed medications. Report any animal needing veterinary care to the Animal Shelter Operations Supervisor.
3. Show animals that are available for adoption to prospective new owners. Advise them on animal behavior, training, and breed characteristics.
4. Assist with performing euthanasia.
5. Perform paperwork associated with shelter animals.
6. Operate crematory to dispose of animal carcasses, clean out and dispose of ashes.
7. Receive and book in animals from the public.
8. May coordinate training and activities for volunteers and other off-site events.
9. Perform janitorial tasks and groundskeeping, including minor maintenance and snow removal.
10. May answer phone calls regarding policies, lost and found animals, animal availability, and other office duties. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

Ordinary business contact with employees in own division and continuous public contact.
JOB RESPONSIBILITY:
Supervises volunteer staff; experiences mostly routine with a few minor problems; little immediate supervision is required, must use own initiative in handling most problems; the consequences of error, carelessness, or mistaken judgment require normal effort to recover.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
A multi-tasking environment (animal shelter) where conditions are generally unpleasant with disagreeable conditions (noise, odors, ashes from crematory, and year-round outdoor environment) with a major health and accident risk; requires extended periods of fast-paced physical effort requiring frequent pushing, pulling, and scrubbing with short periods of heavy lifting (50+ lbs.).
This position falls under the Borough’s Blood Borne Pathogen (BBP) Exposure Control Program as it is reasonably anticipated that infrequent exposure to blood or other bodily fluids may occur while performing some job duties.
