Full Job Description

Summary/Objective

The Community Supervision Officer (CSO) for Smith County CSCD provides professional supervision and case management services to individuals placed on community supervision. This position is responsible for monitoring compliance with court-ordered conditions, maintaining accurate case documentation, assessing and addressing client needs, and ensuring timely communication and follow-up. The CSO works closely with the courts, attorneys, treatment providers, law enforcement, and other agencies to promote accountability, public safety, and successful completion of community supervision.
Case supervision must be conducted in a manner consistent with Texas Department of Criminal Justice – Community Justice Assistance Division (TDCJ-CJAD) standards, department policy, and the directives of the Court

Hours are 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Monday – Friday. Salary is $57,000.00 with a competitive benefits package. In addition to the online application, a resume and certified copy of college transcript are required prior to interview.

Although the Smith County Community Supervision and Corrections Department (CSCD) is affiliated with Smith County, CSCD employees are not county employees.

Duties and Responsibilities

Manage an assigned caseload and supervise defendants in accordance with court orders and department policies.
Be familiar with current state laws, court directives, and department policies/procedures and apply them to case management or other situations as they develop.
Assess defendants and develop case plans based on risk and needs.
Maintain accurate case records and document all required contacts and activities.
Monitor compliance through office visits, field visits, urinalysis testing, treatment, employment, and other supervision requirements.

Address violations by documenting noncompliance and preparing required reports and legal actions.
Make appropriate referrals to treatment, education, employment, and community resources.
Communicate with courts, attorneys, law enforcement, providers, and defendants regarding supervision matters.
Prepare reports and testify in court as required.

Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of individuals.
Ability to work independently, prioritize responsibilities, and complete tasks accurately and efficiently.
Ability to work cooperatively and effectively as part of a team.
Ability to maintain confidentiality, professionalism, and appropriate workplace conduct.
Basic computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office.
Ability to type at least 45 words per minute.
Must speak, read, and write English fluently.
Previous case management experience preferred but not required.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree conferred by an institution of higher education accredited by an accrediting organization recognized by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment, with regular field visits to offender residences, workplaces, and treatment facilities.
Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching, bending, and computer use are required. Occasional lifting, filing, and carrying documents and office materials up to 10 pounds may be required.
Regular contact with individuals who have been convicted of criminal offenses is required, including work in unsupervised field settings.
Employee must maintain appropriate attire, professionalism, confidentiality, and the ability to work cooperatively as part of a team at all times.

Licenses and Certifications

Must successfully complete the CJAD CSO certification course and pass the applicable certification examination within one year of the date of employment.
