About the Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Financial Accountant to join a collaborative Finance team in Alexandria, Virginia. This role is ideal for an experienced accounting professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment and enjoys leading financial reporting, ensuring compliance, and mentoring team members.
As a key contributor, you will oversee critical accounting processes, support strategic financial planning, and help ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial operations.
What You’ll Do
- Lead month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring timely and accurate completion
- Prepare, review, and analyze financial statements and management reports
- Reconcile general ledger accounts (cash, investments, loans, fixed assets) and resolve complex discrepancies
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, regulatory requirements, and internal policies
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis to aid strategic planning
- Review and approve journal entries, reconciliations, and financial transactions
- Monitor financial performance and identify trends
- Coordinate internal and external audits, including preparation of documentation and schedules
- Research and interpret accounting standards and regulatory updates, advising leadership as needed
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff, providing guidance and training
- Partner with cross-functional teams to improve financial processes and reporting accuracy
- Recommend and support system and process enhancements
- Maintain strict confidentiality of financial data
- Perform additional duties as assigned

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience in a credit union or financial institution
- Strong experience with financial statement preparation, audits, and regulatory compliance
- Advanced knowledge of GAAP and familiarity with NCUA regulations, internal controls, and risk management practices
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and the Microsoft Office Suite
- Experience with Symitar and ProfitStars preferred
