Senior VMware Engineer
Role and Responsibilities The client is seeking an experienced Senior VMware Infrastructure Engineer to support, engineer, administer, and optimize enterprise virtualization and hybrid cloud infrastructure. This engineer will serve as a senior technical resource responsible for implementing, and maintaining highly available, secure, and scalable VMware and Microsoft Azure environments supporting mission-critical business applications. The candidate should possess extensive hands-on experience with VMware technologies, enterprise infrastructure, Azure cloud services, automation, scripting, storage, disaster recovery, and infrastructure modernization. This role partners closely with infrastructure, cloud, cybersecurity, storage, and application teams to deliver resilient enterprise platforms while driving automation, operational excellence, and continuous improvement. Responsibilities: VMware Infrastructure Engineering Deploy, configure, administer, and support enterprise VMware vSphere environments. Install, configure, and maintain VMware ESXi hosts and VMware vCenter Server. Engineer and administer highly available VMware clusters utilizing: VMware High Availability (HA) Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS) vMotion Storage vMotion VMware Distributed Switches (VDS) VMware Lifecycle Manager VMware vSAN Provision, configure, and optimize virtual machines while managing CPU, memory, storage, and resource allocation across enterprise environments. Administer VMware licensing, monitor utilization, and optimize infrastructure costs. Perform VMware infrastructure upgrades, lifecycle management, patching, firmware updates, and hardware refresh initiatives. Monitor virtualization health, performance, capacity, and availability while proactively identifying optimization opportunities. Troubleshoot complex virtualization, storage, and performance-related issues across enterprise environments. Data Center Infrastructure Administration Administer and optimize physical and virtual server environments across enterprise data centers. Perform server lifecycle management including provisioning, upgrades, decommissioning, and capacity planning. 2 Monitor hardware health, coordinate firmware updates, and manage vendor-supported hardware maintenance. Own enterprise storage administration across SAN, NAS, Fibre Channel, and iSCSI environments. Perform LUN provisioning, storage allocation, volume management, storage performance tuning, and capacity forecasting. Support enterprise backup, replication, business continuity, and disaster recovery technologies. Azure Cloud & Hybrid Infrastructure Design, deploy, administer, and optimize Microsoft Azure infrastructure including: o Azure Virtual Machines o Virtual Networks o Azure Storage o Platform Services o Hybrid connectivity Manage Azure AD (Microsoft Entra ID), Role-Based Access Control (RBAC), Conditional Access, identity governance, and hybrid identity solutions. Support hybrid cloud architectures integrating on-premises VMware environments with Azure cloud services. Implement cloud governance practices including: o Resource tagging o Cost optimization o Reserved Instance planning o License optimization o Resource right-sizing Build and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform, ARM Templates, or Bicep. Develop and maintain infrastructure deployment pipelines utilizing Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions. Disaster Recovery & VMware Resiliency Design, implement, and maintain VMware disaster recovery solutions supporting business-critical workloads. Configure, administer, and validate VMware High Availability (HA), vMotion, Storage vMotion, and VMware Site Recovery capabilities to ensure maximum uptime and resiliency. Plan, execute, and document VMware disaster recovery and failover testing for virtual infrastructure. Manage virtual machine replication, backup integration, recovery validation, and restoration procedures. Perform planned workload migrations and failovers between VMware clusters and data centers with minimal business disruption. Validate Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) and Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) for VMware-hosted applications and virtual machines. Troubleshoot VMware replication, failover, recovery, and storage-related issues while implementing corrective actions. Develop and maintain disaster recovery runbooks, recovery procedures, and VMware operational documentation. Collaborate with infrastructure, storage, cloud, and application teams to continuously improve VMware resiliency, availability, and recovery capabilities. Automation & Infrastructure Engineering 3 Develop automation solutions using: o PowerShell o PowerCLI o Python Automate infrastructure provisioning, configuration management, reporting, and operational workflows. Drive infrastructure standardization through scripting, automation, and Infrastructure as Code practices. Participate in infrastructure modernization initiatives and cloud migration projects. Operational Excellence Perform infrastructure health assessments and develop recommendations for performance, scalability, security, and operational improvements. Develop and maintain architecture documentation, engineering standards, operational procedures, runbooks, and technical diagrams. Collaborate with cloud, cybersecurity, storage, and application teams to deliver enterprise infrastructure solutions. Participate in incident response, root cause analysis, problem management, and continuous service improvement initiatives. Participate in infrastructure modernization and cloud migration initiatives. Qualifications: Minimum of 5+ years of enterprise VMware engineering and infrastructure administration experience. Extensive experience administering VMware vSphere, ESXi, and VMware vCenter Server. Proven experience engineering highly available VMware clusters. Strong experience with: VMware HA DRS vMotion Storage vMotion VMware Distributed Switches VMware Lifecycle Manager VMware vSAN Experience supporting enterprise environments consisting of physical and virtual infrastructure. Strong knowledge of enterprise storage technologies including SAN, NAS, Fibre Channel, and iSCSI. Experience supporting Windows Server and Linux operating systems. Experience performing enterprise infrastructure upgrades, migrations, and modernization initiatives. Strong scripting and automation experience using PowerShell, PowerCLI, or Python. Experience administering Microsoft Azure infrastructure and hybrid cloud environments. Experience with Infrastructure as Code using Terraform, ARM Templates, or Bicep. Experience implementing CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions. Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, documentation, and communication skills. Proven ability to influence technical decisions and collaborate effectively across cross-functional teams without direct authority. Preferred Experience VMware Certified Professional (VCP) or VMware Certified Advanced Professional (VCAP). Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate or Azure Solutions Architect Expert. Experience supporting enterprise environments with 1,000+ virtual machines. Multi-site data center administration experience. Experience leading hybrid cloud deployments and cloud migration initiatives. Experience with automation-first operational environments. Knowledge of ITIL service management practices. Experience supporting Fortune 500 or other large enterprise organizations. Experience with infrastructure monitoring, observability, and enterprise management platforms.
Pay: $52.00 - $55.00 per hour
