Overview
We are seeking a passionate, dependable, and compassionate Direct Support Professional (DSP) to provide individualized support to an adult participant who is Deaf. In this important role, you will help promote the participant’s independence, communication, community involvement, social development, and overall quality of life.
The ideal candidate will understand the importance of accessible communication and person-centered support. American Sign Language (ASL) proficiency and/or experience working with individuals who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing is strongly preferred.
This position offers a meaningful opportunity to support an individual in becoming more independent, developing community connections, participating in preferred activities, and achieving goals identified within their Individual Support Plan (ISP).
Responsibilities
- Provide individualized, person-centered support based on the participant’s ISP, needs, preferences, and personal goals
- Utilize ASL, visual communication, and other preferred communication methods to support effective communication
- Support the participant with community outings, recreational activities, appointments, shopping, transportation, and other meaningful activities
- Encourage independence, self-advocacy, informed choice, and personal decision-making
- Assist with developing and maintaining independent living and community participation skills
- Support opportunities for socialization and building meaningful relationships within the community
- Identify activities and community resources that are accessible and aligned with the participant’s interests
- Provide appropriate prompts, guidance, and assistance while encouraging the participant to complete tasks as independently as possible
- Follow all health, safety, behavioral, and participant-specific support protocols
- Maintain the participant’s privacy, dignity, individual rights, and confidentiality
- Complete accurate service notes, EVV documentation, and other required records in accordance with agency requirements
- Communicate professionally with the participant, family, support team, and Achievable Home Care management
- Participate in required training, including participant-specific ISP training
Skills
- American Sign Language (ASL) proficiency strongly preferred
- Experience working with individuals who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
- Understanding of Deaf culture, communication accessibility, and person-centered support
- Experience supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (ID/A), autism, or other support needs
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to promote independence rather than creating dependence
- Ability to support community integration, socialization, and development of meaningful relationships
- Experience with positive behavior support and de-escalation strategies is a plus
- Ability to follow an Individual Support Plan (ISP) and implement identified goals and strategies
- Strong documentation and organizational skills
- Dependable, patient, respectful, and professional
- Ability to work collaboratively with families, Supports Coordinators, Program Specialists, and other members of the participant’s support team
- Reliable transportation and willingness to support the participant in community settings
- Ability to successfully complete all required background checks, orientation, training, and onboarding requirements

Pay: $19.00 - $25.00 per hour
