The Transportation Engineer Trainee 1 will report to the Building and Grounds section of the Operations Division in Charleston, West Virginia. This position performs beginning level training work to develop proficiency in the use of knowledge, skills, and abilities in highway/civil engineering. Employees in this class participate in an on-the-job training program under the supervision of Transportation Engineers. The incumbent will assist in inventories for buildings and Cenforce Building & Grounds (B&G) section. Duties include reviewing building and Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) plans, analyzing data from Google sheets that involve B&G entities, attending meetings for B&G priorities, assisting in purchasing involved projects to submit to Procurement, and preparing for the Fundamentals of Engineering exam. These duties are designed to develop the employee’s ability to apply knowledge and skills in the civil engineering field for the solution of practical problems and to develop solutions that conform to departmental policies, rules, and regulations, as well as professional standards. Work is closely reviewed throughout the assignment for completeness and technical accuracy. Performs related duties as required.
Special Requirement: A valid license as a registered professional engineer in West Virginia is required within ten (10) years of employment.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES In a training capacity:
- Performs data analysis to determine the posted load limits for bridges
- Coordinates construction project activities with utility companies
- Determines horizontal and vertical highway alignments
- Prepares drainage computations
- Perform field inspection of traffic problems
- Perform field inspection of construction projects
- Prepare preliminary cost estimates for highway projects
- Makes detailed design computations for roadways and bridges
- Perform field checks at highway construction project sites
- Performs design and drafting as required
- Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
REQUIRED TRAINING/EDUCATION

Bachelor’s degree in civil, electrical, mechanical, industrial, petroleum, mining, environmental, engineering technology, or a related engineering field from an ABET-accredited program.

Substitution: Certification as an Engineer Intern (EIT) by the Board of Registration for Professional Engineers of West Virginia. Please attach your certification for verification.
Note: For the training/education, the qualifying degree must be verified before the employee may be certified as permanent. Please attach your degree transcript or diploma to your application.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

This is the entry-level classification in this series. No prior experience is required.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: A VALID LICENSE AS A REGISTERED PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER IN WEST VIRGINIA IS REQUIRED WITHIN TEN (10) YEARS OF EMPLOYMENT.
