Job Purpose: The Preauthorization Specialist plays a critical role in obtaining preauthorization and insurance verification for medical procedures, tests, and treatments.
Essential Functions:
1. Review patient medical records and treatment plans to determine the need for preauthorization and insurance coverage verification.
2. Research and understand insurance company guidelines, policies, and procedures related to preauthorization requirements.
3. Collect and complete the necessary information and documentation for preauthorization, including medical records, diagnostic reports, and treatment plans.
4. Submit preauthorization requests to insurance companies via phone, online portals, or other designated channels.
5. Communicate with healthcare providers, including physicians, nurses, and other staff members, to gather additional information for preauthorization requests.
6. Follow up with insurance companies to ensure the timely review and approval of preauthorization requests.
7. Provide regular updates to healthcare providers regarding the status of preauthorization requests and any additional requirements from insurance companies.
8. Collaborate with the billing and coding team to ensure accurate and complete submission of preauthorization documentation for claims processing.
9. Maintain accurate records of preauthorization requests, approvals, denials, and any related correspondence.
10. Stay updated with changes in insurance policies, regulations, and billing requirements to ensure compliance and maximize reimbursement.
11. Assist patients and their families in understanding the preauthorization process, insurance coverage limitations, and potential out-of-pocket costs.
12. Additional duties as assigned.
