Job Summary
The Library Facilities Assistant is responsible for helping maintain clean, safe, welcoming, and well-functioning library facilities through routine custodial work, minor maintenance tasks, grounds upkeep, and support for building operations. This position helps ensure that library spaces are inviting, accessible, and ready to serve patrons and staff. This position primarily serves the Jonesborough branch, although travel between the Jonesborough and Gray branches may be required.
Position Requirements
Education:
· High School Diploma or equivalent. Experience may be substituted for education.
Experience:
· One (1) year facilities or custodial work preferred.
Physical Abilities:
· Must hold a valid driver’s license.
· Must be able to frequently lift, push, or carry objects up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation. Duties require employee to crouch, stoop, and bend.
· Must be able to work from platform or stepladder when necessary.
Knowledge of:
· Basic computer and website navigation to input hours worked
· Basic OSHA/ workplace principles
· Safe chemical handling
· Minor maintenance, such as adjusting furniture, replacing light bulbs, or other similar activities
Ability to:
· Demonstrate a strong customer service orientation
· Understand verbal and written communications and instructions
· Deal tactfully and effectively with a variety of individuals, including library staff, patrons and vendors
· Work independently with minimal supervision
· Prioritize multiple tasks and adjust to changing needs
· Operate vacuums and other related equipment
· Safely use cleaning equipment and supplies
· Lift and manipulate heavy objects
Essential Tasks
(Not inclusive)
· Performs routine custodial duties including (but not limited to) vacuuming, dusting, mopping floors, cleaning and stocking bathrooms, emptying trash, window cleaning
· Clear debris from library grounds, including (but not limited to) removing leaves from entrances, sweeping sidewalks, applying ice melt in winter, removing snow and ice if necessary, picking up litter
· Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies
· Conducts routine inspections of public and staff areas to identify safety or maintenance concerns and report them to the Library Services Manager
· Monitors custodial supply inventory and notifies Library Services Manager when supplies need replenishing
· Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices
· Provides vendors with access to areas for cleaning as needed and reports vendor information to the Library Services Manager
· Unlocks or secures designated areas of the library as assigned
· Assists with setup and breakdown of meeting rooms, programs, and special events
· Uphold policies established by the Library Board of Trustees
· Assists with miscellaneous facility-related projects as assigned
