SUMMARY
The Carlstar Group Maintenance Apprentice position is an hourly position responsible for continuous performance according to assigned job specifications. The successful candidate will be committed to safety, good housekeeping, and a willingness to learn. Maintenance Apprentice employees can be trained and assigned to any of the roles of the below listed jobs at the manufacturing plant, and often will rotate between the different jobs as business needs dictate including Maintenance Apprentice, CMM Operator, Entry Level Machinist, TBM/Mold Setup Tech.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Maintenance Apprentice
Build, install, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair manufacturing equipment and machinery.
Train with maintenance team to plan, perform, conduct and oversee required maintenance tasks.
Gain experience in machine shop, welding shop, electrical shop, and repair of all plant equipment
Work with sheet metal, structural steel, machine steel, hydraulics, electrical equipment and distribution under 500 volts
Work with electrical devices, sewage systems, control and weighing devices and a wide range of auxiliary service equipment
Restore, renovate, adapt, service, and maintain machinery and equipment
Read and use calipers, micrometers, flow meters, light meters, Volt/Ohm/Amp Meters, and other measuring and control equipment
Read, understand, and interpret blueprints, mechanical and electrical schematics, piping diagrams in orthographic, isometric, and sketch views
Use personal tools during training in apprenticeship
Observe safety precautions as applicable to self, subordinates, and others
Detect, report, and correct faulty or unsafe operations and conditions
Multi-craft work involves presence in a wide range of factory areas and environments and dealing with operations of complexity requiring judgment, planning, and quick responses
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: CMM Operator
Ability to program using PC DMIS
Ability to program the CMM’s for all standard inspections - and the ability to interpret the data or output of these machines.
Assisting in the development of root cause and corrective action from audit or customer failures. Failures will be evaluated, and a root cause determined. The technician will help to determine the root cause and help to develop an appropriate corrective action.
Capable of managing project activities
Ability to communicate effectively.
Run facilities calibration program.
Manage ISO document control system and perform internal audits per our ISO 9001:2008 standard.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Entry Level Machinist
This is primarily a training position that helps you develop the skills needed for becoming a professional machinist.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
Knowledge of power tools and their safe operation
Operate and maintain various types of machinery
Set up and adjust machines to ensure proper functioning
Monitor machines and read measurements
Perform routine maintenance task on machinery
Ability to use precise measuring instruments and equipment.
Ability to perform mathematical calculations and work under the supervision of an experienced machinist.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: TBM/Mold Setup Tech
Set up the machines and/or presses.
Position, evaluate and adjust machine tooling using basic hand tools.
Perform maintenance type work on equipment
Perform other duties as required
Remove bladder assembly and top/bottom molds
Install new mold set (top and bottom)
Install bead rings, close molds, set pressures, and check mold alignments
Set cure times and do First Piece trial
Clean molds when they are dirty
Perform maintenance type work on presses and equipment
Do other related duties as assigned by Supervision
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: All Maintenance Apprentice Employees
The employee should have the following:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
Applicants seeking GED: Enroll in our GED Ready program to help you get a GED while working
Manufacturing experience preferred but not required, candidate will be trained for this position in-house
Ability to work in a challenging environment while meeting production and quality goals
Ability to obtain and maintain a valid forklift or equipment license as needed or required
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT: All Maintenance Employees

Work safely around continuous moving mechanical parts
Work in a hot environment while meeting production rates
Be exposed to a noisy environment and comfortable with PPE requirements
Maintain regular attendance and punctuality for 8–12-hour shifts
Be comfortable standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, walking, leaning, and working around rotating equipment.
Be comfortable lifting up to 50 lbs.
Ability to push/pull 50-150 lbs. on a wheeled cart; static push/pull: 20 lbs.
Ability to stoop, stand, squat, and move at a continuous pace for 8+ hours/day.
Pinch minimum 6 lbs.
Grasp minimum 35 lbs.
Full range of motion required: cervical, shoulders, elbow, wrist, fingers, hands, truck twist, and feet.
Working Conditions: moderate noise, moving mechanical parts, static shock, burns, go up heights, odors, dust, protrusions, narrow access, good vision, and hearing.
Any lifting over 70 lbs. must be completed with assistance through mechanical or individual associate
Certain positions required a Forklift Certification
