Role Overview
The Director of Facilities oversees all aspects of building and grounds maintenance, safety, security, appearance, and cleanliness. You will ensure our campus meets or exceeds federal, state, and local regulations, coordinate vendors and internal teams, and support day-to-day operations as well as long-term facility planning.
Key ResponsibilitiesMaintenance & Repairs
- Lead daily and preventive maintenance programs; track and prioritize work orders
- Conduct morning building walkthroughs to verify safety, cleanliness, and functionality
- Oversee outdoor spaces (play areas, sports complexes, parking structures)
- Manage major repair and renovation projects (roofing, HVAC, security systems, lighting, seasonal/weather tasks)
Equipment & Supplies
- Source and maintain inventories of custodial, grounds, and maintenance supplies
- Ensure custodial teams keep stock levels and equipment in good working order
- Monitor budgets and optimize purchasing for cost-efficiency
Safety & Compliance
- Interpret and enforce OSHA, EPA, ADA, and other environmental/safety regulations
- Coordinate inspections (asbestos, lead, air quality, waste management)
- Serve as first responder and point person for facilities emergencies and drills
- Regularly evaluate security protocols; recommend and implement improvements
Vendor & Personnel Management
- Oversee vendor selection, bidding, contract negotiation, and performance evaluation
- Supervise on-site facilities staff; delegate tasks and ensure accountability
Program & Event Support
- Partner with administrators, faculty, and families to accommodate special events and program needs
- Provide logistical support for school functions and meetings
Budgeting & Strategic Planning
- Collaborate with the Head of School and corporate office to prepare and manage the annual facilities budget
- Contribute to long-range facility planning in alignment with school goals
Qualifications & Requirements
- Experience: Minimum 2 years in facilities management (school setting preferred)
- Technical Skills: Strong background in project coordination, mechanical systems, landscaping, and general maintenance
- Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with OSHA, EPA, ADA, and other safety/environmental standards
- Leadership: Proven supervisory experience; ability to delegate and develop team members
- Communication: Excellent written and verbal skills; capable of articulating plans and emergency procedures
- Personal Attributes: High integrity, emotional maturity, and the ability to remain composed in emergencies
- Physical Demands: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb, squat, and respond rapidly to urgent situations
