KENNEL / TECNICIAN ASSISTANT - Job Summary
Under direction of any doctor or technician on duty, provides for the constant cleanliness of cages, and all areas of the hospital and the proper feeding and care of all hospitalized animals at Stahl Exotic Animal Veterinary Services (SEAVS).
We care for rodents, reptiles, birds and small mammals. We do not examine dogs, cats, primates, farm animals, zoo exotics or venomous snakes.
SPECIFIC DUTIES
- Cleans and sanitizes all cages, incubators and related areas
- Cleans and sanitizes instruments, bowls, water bottles, anesthesia tanks, etc.
- Maintains animals in the hospital with clean papers, litter boxes and water/food, changing as needed.
- Maintains the treatment area of the hospital; sweeping, dusting, organizing and keeping up with the general neatness of the area at all times.
- Assists receptionists with cleaning exam rooms after used; sweeping, wiping tables/chairs and restocking of instruments, supplies and towels.
- Stocks the supplies and instruments in the treatment area.
- Cleans and folds towels and restocks them in exam rooms and in treatment.
- Recognizes and records any unusual condition or abnormal behavior of any hospitalized animal bringing any issue to a technician’s attention immediately.
- Feeds each animal as prescribed by the attending D.V.M. and records appetites.
- Receives animals to be admitted for hospital care and is responsible for their proper identification, recording personal possessions and special diets and special requests of owners.
- Releases animals to their owners, prior to a technician going over discharge instructions. Be sure that the animal is clean and that the papers or towels in the bottom of the cage are clean.
- Assists doctors, technicians and other personnel with the administration of medications or with restraint.
- Prepares lab samples
- Cleans, sanitizes surgical instruments and properly wraps them in packs for sterilization.
- Removes garbage and recyclables to the dumpsters in the evening and as needed.
- Other duties assigned as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of: Cleaning and disinfecting methods and the use and care of cleaning materials and equipment
- Proper methods of animal restraint
- Ability to: Use cleaning materials and equipment with skill and efficiency
- Perform moderately heavy physical labor (Lift up to 50lb)
- Sympathetically and patiently care for sick and injured animals.
- Learn to administer oral medications and recognize abnormal conditions.
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
- Be able to communicate well with clients in person and on the phone
- Maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work
- Education: Equivalent to completion of 11th grade
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience: Previous experience in a veterinary hospital preferred, exotic experience is a bonus but not needed
