PHYSICIAN / MEDICAL DIRECTOR POSITION SUMMARY
The Physician / Medical Director is responsible for providing clinical leadership, medical oversight, and quality assurance for healthcare services delivered within the correctional institution. This role ensures that medical care is provided in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, accreditation standards, and organizational policies while supporting the safe, effective, and ethical delivery of healthcare to those in a correctional environment.

PHYSICIAN / MEDICAL DIRECTOR MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Graduate of an accredited medical school.
- Fully licensed to practice in the state of Delaware.
- Current DEA Registration.
- Preferred Board Certified.
- Must be a supportive team member who contributes to and demonstrates teamwork and team concept.
PHYSICIAN / MEDICAL DIRECTOR ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Supervise medical staff including physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals to promote best practices in treatment and documentation.
- Ensure compliance with healthcare laws and regulations related to medical records management, drug enforcement (DEA regulations), and healthcare privacy.
- Oversee utilization management processes to optimize patient care while maintaining cost-effective practices.
- Collaborate with hospital administrators on practice management, budgeting, and resource allocation to support operational efficiency.
- Lead clinical research initiatives and contribute to evidence-based practice improvements that enhance patient outcomes.
- Attend medical, clinical and other meetings, as required.
- Participate in in-service training classes.
- Sponsor Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners in compliance with the state law for correctional facilities.
- Annually review and approve clinical protocols, policies and procedures, and medical disaster plans.
- Ensure and provide on-call services.
- Manage referrals to outside healthcare facilities for appropriateness, quality, and continuity of care.
- Ensure all documentation is timed, legible and signed.
Qualifications
- Medical degree (MD or DO) from an accredited institution with active medical licensure in the relevant state or region.
- Post-residency experience with a minimum of several years in clinical practice, preferably within correctional or hospital settings.
- Proven leadership experience supervising multidisciplinary teams in healthcare environments.
- Extensive knowledge of managed care systems, EMR/EHR systems, and electronic health records management.
- Familiarity with healthcare compliance standards including HIPAA, NCQA standards, FDA regulations, and drug enforcement policies.
- Strong understanding of physiology, anatomy, medical terminology, and clinical development processes.
- Experience in hospital or correctional healthcare settings is highly desirable.
- Excellent project management skills with the ability to coordinate multiple initiatives simultaneously.
- Demonstrated commitment to patient care excellence combined with effective management of medical records and healthcare documentation.
