Job Overview
Heywood Hospital is seeking an experienced Emergency Department Registered Nurse (ED RN) for a 13-week contract assignment in Gardner, Massachusetts.
The ED RN will provide safe, timely, and compassionate care to patients with a wide range of emergency conditions. The ideal candidate should be comfortable working in a fast-paced emergency department, prioritizing multiple patients, responding to rapidly changing conditions, and collaborating with physicians and the healthcare team.
Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive patient assessments and reassessments.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized nursing care plans.
- Provide patient care according to hospital policies, nursing standards, and established protocols.
- Perform ED triage and prioritize patient care based on acuity.
- Safely administer medications, IV therapy, anticoagulation, and vasoactive medications.
- Monitor patients for changes in condition and promptly communicate significant findings.
- Recognize and accurately interpret cardiac arrhythmias.
- Monitor and respond to abnormal laboratory and diagnostic results.
- Care for intubated patients, including suctioning, troubleshooting, and weaning support.
- Interpret ABGs, pulse oximetry, and clinical signs of impaired gas exchange.
- Provide pain assessment and reassessment and evaluate effectiveness of interventions.
- Educate patients and families regarding treatment, medications, discharge instructions, and follow-up care.
- Collaborate with the healthcare team to prepare patients and families for discharge.
- Recognize and appropriately respond to potential abuse, violence, domestic violence, and other safety concerns.
- Complete required mandated reporting and maintain appropriate documentation.
- Collect and maintain forensic evidence and chain of custody when required.
- Respond appropriately to emergency and disaster situations.
- Safely implement and monitor restraint procedures when clinically indicated.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient care and responses.
- Promote patient safety and identify opportunities to reduce medical errors.
- Delegate and supervise appropriate nursing interventions performed by other staff.
- Participate in professional development, education, and staff training.
Required Qualifications
- Current and active Massachusetts RN license – REQUIRED Travel candidates also apply
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN/AS) – REQUIRED
- BLS – REQUIRED
- ACLS upon hire, OR active BLS with the ability to obtain AHA ACLS within 60 days of hire
- AHA PALS within 6 months of hire
- Ability to work 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM
- Must be available to work every other weekend and holidays
- Strong emergency nursing and patient-care skills
Preferred Qualifications
- 3–5 years of Emergency Department experience preferred
- BSN preferred
- TNCC preferred
- ENPC preferred
- CEN preferred
- Previous experience with critical care drips, intubated patients, cardiac monitoring, and emergency procedures preferred
- Meditech experience is a plus
Pay: $60.00 - $65.00 per hour
