About Nomad-Chicago
NOMAD is the vision of Lara Moynihan - a woman, wife, mother of four, corporate attorney and philanthropist. Amidst a successful professional career, Lara found that her passion and focus was shifting more toward her non-profit work. It was through her work with I GROW CHICAGO (IGC), whose goal is to transform Chicago’s Englewood community from surviving to thriving, that she felt a calling to provide opportunities to those least served.
As she contemplated how to directly provide opportunity, she discovered a retail space that she fell in love with, located in Chicago’s River North neighborhood. Around the same time, Lara and her friend, Erika Nolan, connected with a woman in Oaxaca, Mexico, who worked with local Mexican artisans to create and sell beautifully handcrafted items as a way to support their families.
Lara decided that with Erika, a seasoned retail executive, as her consultant, she could create a space that would offer Chicago something unique and provide employment opportunities for the IGC community.
While Erika and Lara gathered inventory, tasted coffee, and designed what they hoped to be a beautiful and welcoming space for both customers and employees, Lara worked with the IGC team to determine the best ways for NOMAD to serve the Englewood community. While it’s Lara’s hope that NOMAD’s partnership with IGC will continuously expand, initially they will serve IGC by providing retail and cafe training and employment for Englewood residents within the IGC community. Additionally, they will donate perishables every week to IGC’s Peace House and annually share its net profits to expand IGC's Peace Campus in West Englewood.
NOMAD hopes that by offering unique goods, delicious coffee and treats, and meeting and event space, it will be on everyone’s list of places to discover in Chicago.
