Regular attendance at Employer's place of business and/or during particular hours, as assigned, is an essential function of this position. Employee must comply with and follow YWCA’s attendance policy at all times, unless a reasonable accommodation is requested and granted, as required by law.

Plans and leads exercise/activity sessions in one or more assigned fitness areas, such as low impact aerobics, stretching/flexibility, yoga, general fitness, and/or specialty training.

Instructs individuals and groups in aquatic and motor skill activities including, but not limited to, floating, facilitating upper/lower limb responses and head control, preschool swimming, learn-to-swim, lifesaving, water safety, etc.

Prepares weekly lesson plans for each level of fitness. Develops program into Level I, Level II, Level III and advanced level.

Provides sound knowledge of different exercises programs, diet and health related issues to participants.

Designs a fitness class format that encourages safety and maximum class participation. Enforces safety regulations, striving to prevent accidents, and maintains pool discipline at all times.

Conducts emergency drills with staff when requested including the handling of neck and back injuries, falling on the desk, first aid, rescue breathing, CPR, and fire drill techniques.

Monitors class attendance and enrollment.

Motivates participants to stay healthy and keep fit with a positive ‘can do’ attitude.

Prepares class meeting area and ensures that classes start and end on time. Enthusiastically greets students before each class.

Sets up and monitors class equipment, performs regular maintenance and ensures its return in serviceable condition.

Prepares and master’s the instruction of an entire fitness class using the current national standards/ sports guidelines and procedures.

Ensures that safety and injury prevention policies and procedures are adhered to by participants; reports accidents and prepares accident reports, as required.

Assesses participants for medical conditions that impact participation in fitness programs and refers them to appropriate health professionals if needed.

Advises participants on program and class procedures and policies, as appropriate.

Distributes handouts and/or class evaluations and answers questions from participants after each session.

Monitors participant intensity levels. Watches for signs of overexertion and gives periodic exertion level checks.

Assists members on the workout floor and keeps the facility clean.

Tracks progress of clients, maintaining client files as appropriate.

Helps with health fairs and special events.

High school degree or equivalent or be a minimum of 16 years of age enrolled in school with an active student status.

One (1) year practical experience in swim training and conditioning, water safety and aquatic fitness; or any equivalent experience or training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Possession a nationally recognized life guard certification preferred. Certification must remain current throughout employment with the YWCA.

Must possess swimming skills to successfully pass a swim test.

Must successfully complete the in-house Aquatics Trainer Certification before instructing in YWCA pools.

Recognized competency in field of instructional expertise required. May require discipline-specific certification from but not limited to ACE, AEA, ACSM, NSCA, and AFAA.

CPR and First Aid Certification required.

Position requires superb physical condition.

Must be able to effectively communicate with people of all ages.

Must be willing to work weekends, late afternoons, and evenings and/or before and after normal hours.

Ability to create a fun atmosphere in class required.

Must be able to perform job in safest possible manner due to high injury risk.

Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred.

May be required to have access to personal vehicle with valid driver’s license and proof of sufficient liability insurance if assignments required multi-site classes.
