Pilot Car Driver – Job Description (PEVO Certified)
Position Overview
A Pilot Car Driver plays a critical role in escorting oversize and overweight loads safely across the lower 48 states. This position requires PEVO (Pilot/Escort Vehicle Operator) Certification, strong situational awareness, and the ability to coordinate with truck drivers, law enforcement, and other road users. The driver ensures safe routing, hazard identification, and compliance with state-by-state escort regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Escort oversize/overweight loads across interstate and state highways, ensuring safety for the load, the motoring public, and infrastructure.
- Plan and verify approved routes, including identifying height, width, and weight restrictions, construction zones, and potential hazards.
- Communicate clearly with truck drivers via two‑way radio to coordinate maneuvers, lane changes, stops, and hazard avoidance.
- Operate warning equipment, including lights, signs, flags, and sirens, to alert motorists of the approaching load.
- Monitor traffic and road conditions in real time and provide guidance to the load driver to prevent accidents or delays.
- Set up safety equipment such as cones, reflective triangles, and flagging paddles when required.
- Maintain compliance with all state and federal escort regulations, including proper documentation and adherence to permit requirements.
- Provide situational updates to law enforcement or DOT personnel when necessary.
- Travel extensively across the lower 48 states, often on short notice and for extended periods.
Required Qualifications
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- PEVO Certification (Pilot/Escort Vehicle Operator), meeting state‑specific requirements.
- Strong knowledge of traffic laws, oversize load regulations, and multi‑state escort requirements.
- Proficiency with two‑way radios and standard escort communication protocols.
- Ability to remain alert for long periods and maintain focus in varying traffic and weather conditions.
Preferred Skills
- Experience escorting oversize loads across multiple states
- Knowledge of height‑pole operation
- Familiarity with permit routing software
- Strong decision‑making and hazard‑recognition skills
