Duties
- Safely operate commercial trucks, including tractor-trailers, flatbeds, tankers, and refrigerated trailers, following all DOT (Department of Transportation) and FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) regulations.
- Plan and execute over-the-road (OTR) driving routes using GPS navigation systems to optimize delivery times and efficiency.
- Load and unload freight with precision, utilizing manual handling techniques and equipment such as forklifts when necessary.
- Transport hazardous materials (hazmat) and dangerous goods in compliance with hazardous materials regulations.
- Ensure proper securing of cargo during transit to prevent damage or accidents during transportation.
- Conduct thorough vehicle inspections before and after trips to maintain safety standards; report any mechanical issues promptly.
- Maintain accurate logs of driving hours, delivery documentation, and cargo manifests in accordance with DOT regulations.
Skills
- Proven experience in delivery driving or truck driving with a focus on route driving and logistics cargo handling.
- Strong knowledge of truck loading and unloading procedures, including truck loading/unloading safety protocols.
- Familiarity with refrigerated trailer operations and specialized equipment such as tanker trucks or flatbeds.
- Ability to operate manual transmission vehicles confidently and handle manual handling tasks efficiently.
- Skilled in using GPS navigation systems for route planning and real-time adjustments during deliveries.
- Knowledge of FMCSA regulations, DOT rules, hazardous materials regulations, and safety standards for commercial trucking.
- Experience with freight management systems and documentation required for over-the-road transportation of goods.
