Position Summary
Blue Ribbon Meats & Seafood is seeking an experienced and hands-on Controller to lead the company's accounting and financial operations. This position is responsible for maintaining the integrity of financial reporting, overseeing daily accounting functions, managing cash flow, supporting strategic decision-making, and ensuring compliance with all financial, tax, and regulatory requirements.
As a key member of the leadership team, the Controller will partner closely with ownership and department leaders to drive operational efficiency, profitability, and long-term growth while preserving the values and service standards that have defined Blue Ribbon for more than 75 years.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
- Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Maintain accurate general ledger and accounting records.
- Oversee month-end and year-end closing processes.
- Develop and monitor key financial performance metrics.
- Provide timely financial reporting and recommendations to ownership and senior management.
- Lead budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning activities.
Accounting Operations
- Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and inventory accounting functions.
- Ensure accurate inventory valuation and cost accounting for meat, seafood, and value-added products.
- Manage cash flow forecasting and working capital requirements.
- Monitor banking relationships and treasury activities.
- Establish and maintain strong internal controls and accounting procedures.
Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and applicable federal, state, and local requirements.
- Coordinate annual audits, tax filings, and financial reviews.
- Manage relationships with external auditors, tax advisors, banks, and insurance providers.
- Maintain compliance with all reporting requirements and business licenses.
Leadership & Process Improvement
- Lead, mentor, and develop accounting and administrative staff.
- Evaluate and improve financial systems, reporting tools, and business processes.
- Support operational leaders with profitability analysis, pricing reviews, and cost-control initiatives.
- Participate in strategic planning and business growth initiatives.
- Assist ownership with special projects, acquisitions, capital investments, and financial analysis.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting and financial management experience.
- Strong understanding of financial reporting, budgeting, cash flow management, and internal controls.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software systems.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to interact effectively across all levels of the organization.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced operational environment.
Preferred
- CPA designation.
- Experience in food distribution, manufacturing, wholesale distribution, or related industries.
- Experience with inventory-intensive businesses and cost accounting.
- ERP system implementation or management experience.
- Family-owned business experience.
