The Food Safety and Quality Technician is responsible for supporting the
implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the company’s food safety and quality
management systems. This role involves conducting tests, inspections, and audits to ensure
compliance with regulatory requirements, company policies, and customer specifications.
Role and Responsibilities
Safety:
- Ensure work areas are safe from hazards, participate in safety discussions, weekly safety talks
and follow safety practices and policies.
- Helps promote a safe workplace through observation, action and participation. Actively
communicates with peers to promote a safe work environment.
Laboratory & Analyses:
- Conduct routine and non-routine analyses on raw materials, in-process samples, and finished
products to ensure adherence to quality standards and specifications. These analyses may include
but are not limited to:
- pH testing
- Titration
- Moisture analysis
- Viscosity measurements
- Sensory evaluations
- Microbiological swabbing and plating
- Calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability.
- Maintain a clean and organized laboratory and work environment.
Production:
- Perform monitoring activities, including collecting and analyzing samples from production
areas.
- Monitor and verify critical control points (CCPs) and prerequisite programs.
Documentation & Programs:
- Assist in the implementation and maintenance of HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control
Points) and other food safety programs.
- Accurately document all test results, inspections, and deviations in a timely and organized
manner.
- Assist with supplier quality programs, including reviewing supplier documentation and conducting
audits as needed.
- Participate in training programs related to food safety and quality.
Audits & Investigations:
- Conduct internal audits of food safety and quality systems to verify compliance.
- Assist in the investigation of quality issues, customer complaints, and non-conformances, and
participate in the development of corrective and preventative actions.
- Calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability.
- Maintain a clean and organized laboratory and work environment.
Perform other duties as assigned
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Microbiology, Chemistry, or a related field
preferred. Equivalent work experience in a food manufacturing environment may be considered.
- 2 years of experience in a food safety and quality role within the food industry is
desirable.
- Knowledge of food safety regulations (e.g., FSMA, GMPs, HACCP).
- Experience with laboratory testing procedures and equipment.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Excellent record-keeping and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Good communication (both written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Ability to work various shifts, Monday – Friday and occasional weekends
Preferred Skills
- HACCP certification.
- Experience with GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative) standards such as SQF, BRC, or
IFS.
- Knowledge of statistical process control (SPC).
Physical Requirements
- Ability to physically perform audits, which may involve standing, walking, bending, and lifting
to 50 lbs.
- Ability to work in a warehouse/manufacturing environment with varying temperatures and noise
levels.
- The ability to sit, stand, and walk for 8 hours or more per day.
