The Opportunity:
Whittier Street Health Center is seeking a full-time (40 hours per week) Referral Coordinator to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for coordinating patient referrals to specialty care and ancillary services, ensuring timely access to care, obtaining insurance authorizations when required, and serving as a liaison between patients, providers, specialists, and healthcare organizations. The Referral Coordinator plays a vital role in promoting continuity of care and delivering an exceptional patient experience.
Key Responsibilities:
· Coordinate and process referrals for specialty care, diagnostic testing, imaging, and other healthcare services.
· Schedule specialty appointments and assist patients with referral-related questions and follow-up.
· Obtain and track insurance referrals, prior authorizations, and required documentation.
· Communicate with patients, providers, specialists, hospitals, and insurance companies to facilitate timely care.
· Monitor referral status to ensure appointments are completed and consultation reports are received.
· Maintain accurate referral documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR).
· Verify patient demographics, insurance eligibility, and referral requirements.
· Assist providers with referral workflows and ensure compliance with payer and organizational guidelines.
· Address patient concerns regarding referrals and provide education on the referral process.
· Support quality improvement initiatives by monitoring referral metrics and identifying opportunities to improve access to care
Qualifications:
· High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or coursework in healthcare administration, medical assisting, or a related field preferred.
· Minimum of one year of experience in a medical office, community health center, referral coordination, patient services, or healthcare administration preferred.
· Knowledge of medical terminology, insurance plans, referral processes, and prior authorization requirements.
· Experience working with electronic medical record (EMR) systems and Microsoft Office applications.
· Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
· Strong customer service skills with a patient-centered approach.
