The Role
The Fire Alarm (FAL) Technician is responsible for the installation, testing, inspection, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of commercial fire alarm and life-safety systems.
The FAL Technician will work with fire alarm control panels, initiating devices, notification appliances, communication systems, control modules, monitoring equipment, and associated low-voltage wiring and infrastructure. The technician must be able to read and interpret fire alarm drawings, blueprints, schematics, specifications, manufacturer documentation, and applicable Texas codes and standards.
The position may involve working in new construction, existing facilities, communication and power spaces, ceilings, mechanical rooms, electrical rooms, underground infrastructure, and other areas required to complete assigned projects.
Scope of Responsibilities
The Fire Alarm Technician is responsible for performing quality installations and service work while maintaining the safety of the crew, customers, and work environment.
Responsibilities include:
- Install, service, troubleshoot, test, inspect, and repair commercial fire alarm and life-safety systems.
- Install and terminate fire alarm cable, raceway, conduit, and associated wiring according to project specifications, manufacturer requirements, and applicable codes.
- Install and connect fire alarm control panels, annunciators, power supplies, batteries, initiating devices, notification appliances, modules, relays, and other system components.
- Install and service smoke detectors, heat detectors, duct detectors, pull stations, monitor modules, control modules, horn/strobes, strobes, speakers, and other fire alarm devices.
- Install and connect fire alarm circuits, signaling line circuits, notification appliance circuits, initiating device circuits, and control circuits.
- Perform device addressing, labeling, programming, and system configuration as required.
- Read and interpret fire alarm drawings, electrical plans, blueprints, riser diagrams, wiring diagrams, schematics, and manufacturer specifications.
- Diagnose and resolve problems involving fire alarm circuits, devices, panels, power supplies, batteries, communication paths, and system components.
- Use appropriate testing equipment to troubleshoot circuits, verify continuity, identify faults, and confirm system operation.
- Perform functional testing of fire alarm systems and associated equipment.
- Assist with fire alarm acceptance testing, inspections, commissioning, and troubleshooting with customers, inspectors, authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs), and other contractors.
- Install and maintain fire alarm communication and monitoring equipment.
- Coordinate fire alarm interfaces with other building systems, including HVAC, elevators, access control, security, suppression systems, and other life-safety equipment as required.
- Perform system modifications, additions, relocations, and repairs to existing fire alarm systems.
- Identify deficiencies and recommend corrective action.
- Maintain accurate documentation of installations, testing, service work, device locations, and system changes.
- Receive and complete work orders, service calls, and assigned projects.
- Complete service reports, inspection documentation, and required project paperwork.
- Select appropriate materials, tools, and equipment for assigned work.
- Maintain company-owned tools, equipment, vehicles, and materials.
- Maintain proper inventory of fire alarm components, wire, devices, and installation materials.
- Inspect completed work to ensure systems are installed properly, tested, labeled, and ready for inspection or customer use.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Work professionally with customers, building owners, facility personnel, general contractors, electrical contractors, supervisors, and AHJs.
- Follow all company safety policies, project requirements, manufacturer instructions, and applicable codes and standards.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Safety Responsibilities
The Fire Alarm Technician is responsible for maintaining a safe working environment for themselves and the crew.
Responsibilities include:
- Follow company safety policies and OSHA requirements.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Maintain safe working practices when using ladders, lifts, power tools, testing equipment, and hand tools.
- Follow proper procedures when working around energized electrical equipment and construction hazards.
- Maintain awareness of hazards associated with ceilings, confined areas, underground infrastructure, electrical rooms, and active construction sites.
- Report unsafe conditions, incidents, damaged equipment, and potential hazards to management.
- Ensure work areas are secured and left clean and safe upon completion.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in commercial fire alarm, electrical, low-voltage, or life-safety systems preferred.
- Must hold a valid Texas Fire Alarm License (FAL) or applicable Texas fire alarm license/credential required to perform the duties of the position.
- Must maintain all required licensing and credentials in good standing.
- Strong knowledge of commercial fire alarm systems and their components.
- Working knowledge of applicable Texas electrical and fire alarm codes and requirements.
- Knowledge of NFPA 70 and NFPA 72 requirements.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, fire alarm drawings, schematics, riser diagrams, and written specifications.
- Ability to troubleshoot fire alarm systems using appropriate testing instruments.
- Knowledge of electrical circuits and low-voltage systems.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and measurements.
- Ability to use hand tools, power tools, test equipment, and fire alarm programming equipment.
- Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

- Must be dependable, punctual, and safety-conscious.
- Must be available to work nights, weekends, overtime, or emergency service calls when required by the project.

Pay: $38.00 - $42.00 per hour
