Job Overview: Works within the scope of the Registered Nurse (RN) practice, and in alignment with standards of excellence and quality, providing excellence of patient care under the direction of the Provider and in accordance to The Christ Hospital Health Network mission.
The RN may perform the following duties:
- Screen patient calls to physicians. Call patients to relay advice and instructions from physicians.
- Obtain authorizations for various patient procedures and/or drugs. Call in, and/or prepare prescription orders.
- Educate and support patients and families with problems or needs.
- Assist physician with procedures and examinations. Take patient history and vitals when necessary.
- Appropriately mix and administer chemotherapy. Administer oral medications and injections. Clean chemo area and hood daily when necessary.
- Ensure compliance with all lab policies and procedures. Adhere to the laboratory’s quality control policies. Perform lab equipment proficiency testing as needed.
- Identify problems or factors that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of results. Correct problem or notify appropriate staff.
- Report concerns of safety, quality of patient testing and quality of testing to the Laboratory Director. Report adverse device events to the FDA.
- Perform ongoing physical assessment on all patients. Perform tests as required. Review patient results and respond accordingly. Assist physicians with procedures.
- Maintain accurate and timely patient charting.
- Maintain appropriate amounts of drugs, supplies and teaching aides. Organize closets appropriately.
- Perform necessary patient treatments/drug administrations during the evening or weekend when needed.
- Conform to necessary regulations regarding chemo and any other hazardous waste and dispose of appropriately.
- All other duties as assigned.
Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. BSN preferred.
- The Christ Hospital Health Network does hire AD and Diploma nurses, however;
- All nurses hired after January 2010 must obtain their BSN within 5 years of the date of hire
- A MSN or DNP are not required but supersede the requirement for the BSN.
Licenses and Certifications: Licensed in the state as a Registered Nurse. Acquire and maintain certification as an Oncology Certified Nurse.
Experience: Two (2) years of chemotherapy nursing experience, private practice setting preferred.
Required Skills & Knowledge: Exceptional organizational, written and verbal skills. Keep up to date on the mixing and administration guidelines for chemotherapy.
