Core Responsibilities
- Anesthesia & Surgical Support: Induce, maintain, and monitor gas anesthesia during surgeries. Prepare surgical suite and provide direct surgical nursing assistance to the veterinarian.
- Advanced Nursing Care: Administer prescribed medications, fluid therapies, and vaccines via oral, topical, subcutaneous, or intravenous routes. Perform emergency first aid and triage care.
- Clinical Diagnostics: Collect and process advanced specimens. Perform standard laboratory tests—including blood counts, chemistry panels, and urinalysis—using in-house diagnostic machines.
- Diagnostic Imaging: Position patients safely and operate digital radiography (X-ray) or ultrasound equipment.
- Dental Prophylaxis: Perform professional routine dental cleanings, scaling, and polishing, as well as digital dental radiographs.
- Client Education: Take detailed patient histories, explain complex treatment or discharge plans to pet owners, and counsel families on nutrition and medication administration.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: Requires a 2-year associate’s degree in veterinary technology from an AVMA-accredited program or equivalent experience in the field.
- Physical Demands: Requires the ability to stand for long periods, walk actively, and routinely lift animals weighing 40+ lbs (often with assistance).
- Work Environment: Can be both physically and emotionally demanding. Exposure to animal waste, loud noises, and potential risks of bites, scratches, and contagious diseases should be expected.
- Proficiency with basic computer systems and the ability to learn veterinary software
