Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented MDS Coordinator to join our healthcare team. Duties
- Conduct thorough Minimum Data Set (MDS) assessments for skilled nursing facility residents, ensuring accuracy and completeness in accordance with federal regulations and state guidelines
- Review medical records, clinical documentation, and care plans to verify data accuracy and identify areas for improvement in documentation compliance
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams—including nursing, therapy, social work, and medical staff—to gather pertinent information for MDS completion
- Ensure timely submission of MDS assessments within regulatory deadlines to support proper reimbursement through Medicare and Medicaid programs
- Utilize electronic health record (EHR) systems such as Epic, Cerner, or Athenahealth to document assessments and manage patient data efficiently
- Stay current with updates to coding standards including ICD-10, CPT, ICD-9 (if applicable), DRG classifications, and CMS guidelines for MDS assessments
- Participate in quality assurance activities related to clinical documentation improvement (CDI), utilization review, and compliance with NCQA standards
Requirements
- Proven experience with MDS coordination in a skilled nursing or long-term care setting, with inpatient or nursing home experience preferred
- Strong knowledge of Medicare regulations, ICD-10 coding, CPT coding, ICD-9 (if applicable), DRG assignment, and utilization management processes
- Familiarity with EMR/EHR systems such as Epic, Cerner, Athenahealth, or eClinicalWorks is essential
- Background in nursing or healthcare administration with critical care experience or acute care background highly desirable
- Excellent understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and medical records review processes
- Experience with discharge planning, hospice care, emergency medicine, ICU or trauma center environments is advantageous
- Knowledge of HIPAA regulations and medical documentation standards to ensure confidentiality and compliance
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced setting
