Job Summary:
The Foundry Layout Technician is responsible for performing precise dimensional inspections of castings and tooling using specialized measurement tools and equipment. This role ensures that cast products meet customer specifications and engineering drawings by interpreting layouts, blueprints, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform detailed dimensional inspections of castings and patterns using layout tables, height gauges, micrometers, calipers, CMMs (if applicable), and other precision instruments.
- Interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, and GD&T requirements to verify product compliance.
- Record and analyze measurements, document results, and report non-conformances or deviations to the quality or engineering teams.
- Set up castings on surface plates or layout fixtures using correct reference points and datums.
- Assist quality and engineering teams in root cause analysis of dimensional issues or tooling problems.
- Support pattern and tooling inspections for initial samples, PPAPs, and new product development.
- Maintain and calibrate measuring instruments and ensure they are in proper working condition.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and corrective action processes related to dimensional accuracy.
- Ensure documentation is accurate and complete for audits and traceability.
- Follow all safety protocols and work in a clean, organized manner.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required; technical or vocational training in machining, drafting, or metrology preferred.
- 2–5 years of experience in dimensional inspection or layout work in a foundry or manufacturing environment.
- Strong understanding of blueprints, GD&T, and mechanical inspection methods.
- Proficiency with measurement tools such as calipers, micrometers, indicators, height gauges, and layout equipment.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and follow detailed technical instructions.
- Good communication skills and attention to detail.
- Basic computer skills for data entry and reporting.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM), FARO arm, or laser scanning systems.
- Familiarity with cast iron, aluminum, or steel casting processes.
- Knowledge of quality systems such as ISO 9001 or IATF 16949.
Pay: $20.00 - $30.00 per hour
