Under direction of the Supervising Special Investigator II, the Supervising Special Investigator I (SSI I), provides direct supervision to a team of Northern California Special Investigators in the in Sacramento Headquarters Office. The incumbent directs, plans, and organizes the work of a team of Special Investigators (Non-Peace Officer) responsible for conducting operational, compliance, and/or performance reviews and investigations of individuals or business entities subject to the California Beverage Container Recycling and Litter Act (Act) and the California Code of Regulations Title 14, Division 2, Chapter 5 (Regulations).
Some travel is required within and/or outside the State of California and may include overnight stays. Working irregular hours may be required, including nights and holidays. It may also include weekend and unplanned assignments that will require an adjustment to the employees’ work schedule, including extended periods, requiring overnight accommodations.
Travel to include, but not limited to, driving a motor vehicle and travel via public transportation, including commercial airplane, train, ride-share and in the same vehicle as other staff. Fieldwork will be required in various regions of the state and out-of-state, where weather conditions and temperatures can vary. Must possess required documents to travel via commercial airplane (i.e. Real ID and/or US passport). This position may require up to 50% travel per year.
The incumbent must have and maintain a valid California Driver’s License and participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Employer Pull Notice Program.

Beginning July 1, 2026, CalRecycle staff will be office centered, requiring employees to report to the office at least four days per week. This position may be eligible for hybrid telework under Government Code 14200, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria set forth in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program needs. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the positions designated headquarter location, as reflected on the duty statement and at their own expense.
