The Farm Equipment Operator & Mechanic is responsible for operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing farm equipment used in hemp cultivation. This position plays a critical role in supporting planting, cultivation, irrigation, harvesting, and general farm operations. The successful candidate will safely operate a variety of agricultural equipment while performing preventative maintenance and repairs to minimize downtime and ensure efficient farm operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Equipment Operation
- Safely operate tractors, skid steers, loaders, excavators, forklifts, UTVs, and other farm equipment.
- Perform field preparation, cultivation, planting, harvesting, and material handling activities.
- Transport equipment, supplies, harvested product, and materials throughout the farm.
- Assist with road maintenance, drainage improvements, fencing projects, and other infrastructure work.
- Conduct pre-operation and post-operation equipment inspections.
- Follow all safety procedures and operating guidelines.
Equipment Maintenance and Repair
- Perform routine preventative maintenance on tractors, implements, vehicles, irrigation equipment, and other farm machinery.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and operational issues.
- Troubleshoot equipment failures and coordinate outside repairs when necessary.
- Maintain maintenance logs and service records.
- Monitor inventory levels of parts, filters, fluids, lubricants, and repair supplies.
- Assist with welding, fabrication, and equipment modifications as needed.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe maintenance area.
Hemp Cultivation Support
- Assist with soil preparation, planting, cultivation, harvesting, drying, and post-harvest activities.
- Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair irrigation systems, pumps, filters, and related equipment.
- Monitor irrigation systems and address operational issues promptly.
- Assist with pesticide, herbicide, and fertilizer application in accordance with company procedures and applicable regulations.
- Support crop health and production goals through timely completion of assigned tasks.
- Assist with seasonal farm projects and special assignments as needed.
Property and Facility Maintenance
- Perform general maintenance and repairs on farm buildings, fences, gates, roads, and infrastructure.
- Assist with snow removal, vegetation management, and general property upkeep.
- Identify maintenance needs and recommend improvements to farm operations and equipment reliability.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum two years of experience operating agricultural, construction, landscaping, or similar heavy equipment.
- Mechanical repair experience with diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and agricultural equipment.
- Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot equipment issues independently.
- Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
- Ability to safely operate equipment in varying terrain and weather conditions.
- Strong problem-solving and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work extended hours during peak planting and harvest seasons.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience maintaining and repairing diesel-powered farm equipment.
- Irrigation installation and repair experience.
- Experience operating tractors, loaders, skid steers, excavators, forklifts, and agricultural implements.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to frequently stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, and work in uneven outdoor terrain.
- Ability to regularly lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift up to 75 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Ability to climb on and off equipment multiple times throughout the workday.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, rain, dust, and direct sunlight.
- Ability to perform repetitive motions involving hands, arms, and legs while operating equipment and performing repairs.
- Ability to use hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and welding equipment safely and effectively.
- Ability to safely operate equipment for extended periods of time.
- Visual ability sufficient to inspect equipment, identify hazards, and safely operate machinery.
- Ability to work around noise, vibration, dust, fuels, lubricants, fertilizers, pesticides, and other farm-related environmental conditions while using appropriate personal protective equipment.
Working Conditions
This position is primarily performed outdoors in an agricultural environment. Work may involve exposure to varying weather conditions, dust, noise, chemicals, machinery, and other farm-related hazards. Overtime, weekend work, and seasonal schedule adjustments may be required during planting, cultivation, and harvest periods.
