Full Job Description

**FIRST REVIEW OF APPLICATIONS AUGUST 18TH
The Assistant County Attorney performs prompt and responsible professional legal work for criminal and civil type cases, including case analysis, legal analysis, legal research, legal drafting, and solution of complex legal problems. Prepares, organizes, and presents a wide variety of court cases for jury, court, and administrative trials and other contested cases and appeals. Provides legal advice and issues written opinions to county officials and county employees in both civil and criminal areas of the law. Prepares and presents routine training to law enforcement officers, community groups and other departments.

Examples of Duties

Analyzes and prepares cases and related documentation.
Represents the State of Minnesota or Rice County in a wide variety of criminal and civil hearings, speaking on behalf of victims, clients and the public in Grand Jury proceedings, District Court, Conciliation Court, before magistrates, in administrative hearing and in appellate courts.
Completes legal research and interpretation of the law using both online and book resources.
Provides advice to county departments, law enforcement officers, and other agencies operating within Rice County regarding legal authority, duty and liability as directed by the County Attorney or direct supervisor.
Provides legal training to county personnel as directed by the County Attorney or direct supervisor.
Provides on-call and emergency response to law enforcement, child protection workers and/or probation officers during business hours, at night, weekends and holidays.
Completes other legal and administrative duties as required.
Performs other duties as directed.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school and admission to the Minnesota State Bar as well as less than one year to three or more years of related experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Three years of practice experience are preferred.

UNION: AFSCME – Grade 16

HOURS: This is a professional position with work hours pursuant to County policy. Additional hours may be required to fulfill duties. Attendance at evening meetings may be required.
