Position: Senior Accountant
Summary
The Chicago Laborers’ District Council Benefit Funds are seeking a Senior Accountant to handle the day-to-day accounting operations for two Health & Welfare Funds and two Pension Funds. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment where managing a number of tasks and priorities at the same time are critical to success.
The position requires a minimum of five years of accounting or auditing experience in the Taft-Hartley industry. Commensurate experience will be considered. The Senior Accountant is an individual contributor role reporting directly to the Finance Director. This is a full-time exempt position that offers excellent health, dental, vision, pension, Member Assistance Program (MAP) and the option to participate in a voluntary employee funded 401(k) plan.
Areas of Responsibility
- Responsible for maintaining the general ledger for four employee benefit funds in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Responsible for accounts payables, including processing invoices, proper allocation of expenses to benefit funds, making payments, and supporting documentation.
- Liaison with accounts payable vendors, as necessary.
- Prepare journal entries and supporting documentation.
- Prepare monthly analysis and reconciliations and resolve discrepancies. This includes, but is not limited to: bank accounts, investments, credit cards, employer contributions and receivables, prescription rebates and receivables, Medicare Retiree Drug Subsidy reimbursements and receivables, intercompany activity, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, accounts payables, accrued expenses, tax withholdings, benefit payments, salaries, administrative expenses and professional expenses.
- Reconcile federal withholding, FICA, SUTA and FUTA tax deposits, as necessary.
- Prepare quarterly and annual tax reports, including reconciliation for timely remittance of withholdings on a regular basis.
- Prepare and analyze fiscal year-end reports for audit purposes, and as otherwise requested.
- Recommend, establish and document new processes, workflows and internal controls.
- Prepare monthly financial statements for Health & Welfare Funds and Pension Funds to be presented to the Boards of Trustees.
- Assist with and prepare other reports for Boards of Trustees and Management, as requested.
- Ensure day-to-day operations adhere to the Funds’ policies and procedures.
Other Areas
- Understand and follow HIPAA policies and procedures.
- Comply with Personally Identifiable Information (PII) rules and regulations.
- Collaborate within the department and with other departments to meet Organizational goals.
- Continued professional development is required for the employee in this position.

Required Skills/Abilities
- MS Office Tools: Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Advanced Excel, and Outlook.
- Proficiency in virtual meeting tools: Zoom and Microsoft Teams.
- Proficiency in accounting systems.
- Working knowledge of GAAP and experience with Employee Benefit Plan financial reporting, audit preparation, and account analysis.
- Knowledge of Taft-Hartley funds’ required tax filings including, but not limited to: Form 5500, Form 990, Form 990-T, and FBAR.
- Excellent verbal and written business communication skills.

Education/Certification/Experience Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting is required.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or CPA candidate desired, work experience considered.
- Five years of accounting or auditing experience in the Taft-Hartley industry is required.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
Salary Range: $100,000 – $125,000 (annual) commensurate with skills and experience.
