Hillel at Virginia Tech is seeking to hire a part-time (about 25 hours a week) head chef to manage a grab and go meal plan in the Kitchen each week of the school year and weekly dinners for 50-100 students in addition to 4 major holiday meals a year. Chef will supervise a prep cook, manage their schedule, make sliced deli meats in-house using recipes prepared by current chef, manage ordering with food distributors and maintain inventory. In addition, chef is responsible for preparing one catered dinner a week on Friday evenings with support from a student intern and a dishwasher. Dinner is served at 6:30PM each week. Kitchen is Kosher, supervision is provided by our Rabbi Beryl Trauth-Jurman and training in Kosher will be provided.
This position will provide a unique opportunity to see and participate in the operations of the New River Valley's only commercial Kosher kitchen. Roughly 15 hours a week will be dedicated to preparation, ordering, and managing the grab-and-go meal plan. About 10 hours a week will be preparation for the weekly Friday night dinner. Additional hours available for major holiday catering events. Position has off University breaks including winter break and summer, at least 1 week preparation will be required at the start of each semester.
Responsibilities
- Manage staff preparation of Kosher meal plan sandwiches Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings, fill in if staff is absent, have ingredients prepped and ready for assembly
- Labeling and Delivery to VT production services Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning at 9am, must have vehicle that can fit a large cooler.
- Dishwashing, spraying off dishes and operating a commercial dishwasher, operating a standard 3-sink sanitizing station
- Sweeping, mopping, and cleaning drains
- Additional deep-clean tasks
- Preparation of weekly Friday night dinners for 50-100
- Additional events throughout the year (4 holiday meals, Hanukkah formal, Passover meal plan, and picnics), coordinate wait staff and volunteers for events
Requirements
- This position requires the ability to stand for several hours at a time, bend at the waist repeatedly, lift and carry up to 50 lbs., and lift up to 20 lbs overhead
- ServSafe food manager license required, we may pay for certification on a case-by-case basis
- Some physical accommodations may be possible on a case by case basis.
- Must complete Kosher online training course.
General Qualifications
- Commercial kitchen/food handling experience is required.
- Attention to detail, organization, and excellent attendance is a must
- Ability to work Friday evenings and deliver Sandwiches 3 days a week at 9am
- Supervision experience
- Experience managing inventory and food ordering
