Title: Attorney - Workers' Compensation Defense
Location: LA/OC/SD/Inland Empire with potential remote options
Salary: $130k-$200k/yr DOE
Position Overview
We are seeking a dedicated Attorney specializing in Workers' Compensation Defense to join our litigation team. The attorney will represent employers and insurance carriers in workers compensation claims, manage a caseload from intake through resolution, provide strategic defense counsel, and work closely with claims adjusters and clients to minimize exposure and costs while ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Key Responsibilities

Manage a diverse caseload of workers compensation claims, including drafting pleadings, motions, and discovery, and appearing at administrative hearings and trials.

Provide strategic legal advice to clients and claims adjusters on claims handling, reserve strategies, settlement negotiations, and coverage issues to reduce liability and cost exposure.

Conduct thorough investigations into claim facts, review medical records and expert reports, coordinate with medical and vocational experts, and prepare witness examinations and trial exhibits.

Draft and negotiate settlement agreements, review subpoenas and third-party litigation demands, and oversee subrogation and lien resolution as needed.

Collaborate with claims adjusters, risk managers, and in-house counsel to develop defense strategies and ensure consistent client communication and expectations.

Maintain accurate case files, calendaring, and billing records; meet productivity and documentation standards while managing competing deadlines.

Stay current on workers compensation statutes, case law, and regulatory changes; participate in continuing legal education and contribute to firm training and policy development.
Qualifications

Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and active state bar membership in good standing; licensed to practice in the relevant jurisdiction.

Minimum 3-5 years of experience defending workers compensation claims preferred; civil litigation or insurance defense experience a plus.

Demonstrated knowledge of workers compensation law, claim handling practices, and administrative hearing procedures.

Strong litigation skills, including legal research, motion practice, hearing advocacy, and settlement negotiation.

Experience working with claims adjusters, understanding claims processes and reserving, and collaborating with insurance professionals.

Excellent written and oral communication skills, client-focused approach, and ability to explain complex legal issues to non-lawyers.

Ability to manage a high-volume caseload, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines with attention to detail and strong organizational skills.

Comfortable using case management software, legal research tools, and standard office technology; billing and time-tracking experience preferred.
