Job Overview
The ideal candidate must have a strong background in television journalism and team leadership within a unionized environment. Working closely with the Vice President of News and the News Director, this role is responsible for daily editorial planning and content execution to ensure the success of our newscasts. The Assignment Desk is the team responsible for selecting and coordinating daily news coverage, investigative reporting, and special coverage. This includes following up and supporting field staff, planning logistics, and ensuring editorial quality.
Responsibilities
- Editorial planning and execution of news content across daily broadcasts.
- Collaborate with producers to ensure they have all the required elements and the most up-to-date information for newscasts.
- Coordinate closely with team members on the assignment desk, as well as with reporters and camera crews, to ensure effective daily news coverage.
- Oversee the development of story angles, special reports, and news features in collaboration with the News Director and producers.
- Ensure proper deployment of technical and human resources for news coverage.
- Maintain editorial oversight to uphold high journalistic standards.
- Assist in implementing newsroom policies, workflows, and coverage plans.
- Operate effectively under tight deadlines and in high-pressure, fast-paced environments.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications or related field from an accredited university.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in television news production.
- Proven journalistic judgment and editorial decision-making in daily news operations.
- Extensive experience in electronic journalism and television reporting.
- Strong leadership and team supervision skills.
- Fully bilingual in Spanish and English, both written and spoken.
- Proficiency in news writing and editing for broadcast.
- Skilled in newsroom software and tools including: iNews, Instinct, Avid Media Central, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
- Knowledge of TV control room operations and workflows.
- Strong ability to lead in high-stress situations with tight deadlines.
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
