Position Summary
The Dog Trainer is responsible for implementing training programs and enrichment activities
that support the behavioral health and adoptability of shelter dogs. This position works directly
with dogs on basic manners, confidence-building, and adoptability skills. The Dog Trainer plays
a key role in improving quality of life, reducing stress, and helping dogs successfully transition
into homes through consistent training and enrichment.
Reporting Structure
● Reports directly to Shelter Management
● Works in collaboration with the Behaviorist and animal care staff
Key Responsibilities
● Work to develop and implement individualized training plans for each dog
● Work hands-on with dogs to reinforce positive behaviors and reduce undesirable
behaviors
● Focus on basic obedience, leash skills, socialization, and confidence-building
● Provide consistent feedback to the Shelter Manager on each dog’s progress
● Document training sessions, enrichment provided, progress, and behavioral
observations in shelter software
● Implement daily enrichment activities to reduce stress, prevent behavioral deterioration,
and improve overall well-being
● Utilize low-effort, consistent enrichment strategies (e.g., food-based enrichment, scent
work, foraging, lick items)
● Assist in preparing dogs for adoption by improving handling skills and working on
appropriate walking/leash behaviors
● Support safe dog introductions during adoptions with prospective adopters and any pets
they may have.
● Utilize positive reinforcement training methods at all times
● Help identify dogs that may benefit from additional training or enrichment support
Adoption Support
● Conduct adoption meet-and-greets and complete adoption processes with approved
adopters
● Support safe dog introductions during adoptions with prospective adopters and their pets
● Provide clear, realistic guidance to adopters on training, enrichment, behavior
expectations, and transition into the home
● Help match dogs with appropriate adopters based on observed behavior and training
progress
Medical Support
● Assist with administering medications as directed by veterinary staff or management
● Assist with vaccinations as permitted by certification and under appropriate supervision
● Obtain and record weights and basic health observations
● Support general medical care of animals as needed, in coordination with veterinary staff
Volunteer & Staff Support
● Assist in guiding staff and volunteers on proper handling, training, and enrichment
techniques
● Demonstrate safe and appropriate interactions with dogs
● Support consistency in training and enrichment approaches across the team
Qualifications
● Experience working with dogs in a professional setting (shelter, daycare, training facility,
etc.)
● Basic understanding of dog behavior and body language
● Ability to safely handle dogs of all sizes, temperaments, and energy levels
● Strong communication and teamwork skills
● Ability to follow structured behavior plans and provide clear feedback
● Commitment to humane, positive reinforcement training methods
● Professional dog training certification preferred (e.g., CPDT-KA, KPA-CTP, IAABC-ADT,
or equivalent), with a strong emphasis on positive reinforcement-based methods
● Equivalent hands-on shelter experience will be considered
Physical Requirements
● Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
● Ability to stand, walk, bend, and handle dogs for extended periods
● Comfortable working in a fast-paced, sometimes high-stress environment
Position Notes
The Dog Trainer works to support each dog’s behavioral plan.The Dog Trainer implements,
reinforces, and provides ongoing feedback on each dog’s progress, including consistent use of
enrichment as part of daily care.
The Dog Trainer collaborates closely with the Behaviorist and Shelter Management to ensure
consistency in training methods and approach across the organization. Final decisions
regarding behavior plans and modifications remain under the direction of the Behaviorist.
Pay: $18.35 - $21.00 per hour
