Position Summary
The Lab Director is responsible for the management, technical oversight, quality assurance, regulatory compliance, personnel supervision, client service, and strategic growth of Lozier Environmental Consulting's environmental laboratory. The laboratory performs asbestos air and bulk analysis, potable and non-potable water microbiology testing, Legionella testing, fungal and bacterial analysis, food microbiology testing, and related environmental laboratory services. The Lab Director serves as the laboratory's technical leader and ensures all testing is performed in accordance with NYSDOH ELAP requirements, approved methodologies, and applicable quality standards.
Laboratory Operations
· Direct day-to-day laboratory operations and workflow.
· Ensure samples are received, logged, analyzed, and reported within required turnaround times.
· Coordinate priorities with Project Managers, industrial hygienists, environmental consultants, and clients.
· Monitor laboratory productivity, capacity, staffing, and scheduling.
· Maintain chain-of-custody procedures and sample tracking systems.
Technical Laboratory Responsibilities
· Oversee asbestos analysis utilizing PCM and PLM methodologies.
· Manage potable and non-potable water testing programs including Total Coliform, E. coli, Fecal Coliform, HPC, Dialysis Water, and Legionella testing.
· Direct laboratory activities involving fungi, mold, airborne bacteria, and environmental microbiology.
· Oversee food microbiology testing and associated QA/QC requirements.
· Review and approve analytical results before release.
· Evaluate and implement new analytical methods and technologies.
Quality Assurance and Regulatory Compliance
· Maintain NYSDOH ELAP accreditation and associated certifications.
· Prepare for audits, inspections, and proficiency testing events.
· Review quality control data, blanks, positive controls, negative controls, duplicates, and laboratory control samples.
· Investigate non-conformances and implement corrective actions.
· Maintain Quality Assurance Manual, SOPs, and training records.
· Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, NYSDOH, ISO/IEC 17025 principles, and company policies.
Instrumentation and Equipment
· Oversee maintenance, calibration, and performance verification of microscopes, incubators, autoclaves, biosafety cabinets, colony counters, and water testing equipment.
· Ensure preventive maintenance schedules are followed.
· Coordinate service contracts and equipment repairs.
Personnel Management
· Recruit, train, mentor, and evaluate laboratory personnel.
· Conduct competency assessments and continuing education programs.
· Promote accountability, teamwork, safety, and continuous improvement.
Safety Responsibilities
· Serve as Laboratory Safety Officer.
· Maintain Chemical Hygiene Plan, Hazard Communication Program, Exposure Control Plan, and waste management procedures.
· Conduct laboratory safety inspections and incident investigations.
Environmental Consulting Support
· Provide technical support for asbestos, mold, indoor air quality, water quality, and industrial hygiene projects.
· Assist project teams with interpretation of analytical results and regulatory requirements.
Administrative and Financial Responsibilities
· Manage operational budgets and laboratory expenditures.
· Track productivity metrics and KPIs.
· Prepare management reports and support growth initiatives.
Required Qualifications
· Bachelor degree in Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology, Environmental Science, or related field.
· A course in Microbiology must show on your college transcripts
· Minimum 5 years laboratory experience.
· Minimum 2 years supervisory or management experience.
· Knowledge of environmental microbiology, asbestos analysis, water testing, and laboratory quality systems.
· Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications
· Experience in an ELAP-accredited laboratory.
· Legionella testing experience.
· Asbestos microscopy experience.
· ISO 17025 quality systems knowledge.
· Environmental consulting laboratory management experience.
Pay: $100,000.00 - $120,000.00 per year
