GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Survey Instrument Technician assists the Survey Crew Lead (Party Chief) in performing land surveying services for a variety of public and private projects. This position is responsible for supporting field operations by operating survey equipment, collecting accurate field data, assisting with construction staking, maintaining equipment, and ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with Rio Delta Engineering's quality standards.
The Survey Instrument Technician is expected to demonstrate professionalism, teamwork, dependability, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety while representing Rio Delta Engineering in the field.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist the Survey Crew Lead with daily surveying activities.
Perform boundary, topographic, ALTA, right-of-way, route, as-built, and construction surveys.
Set up, operate, transport, and maintain Total Stations, GPS/GNSS receivers, digital levels, data collectors, and other survey equipment.
Assist in establishing horizontal and vertical control points and benchmarks.
Collect accurate field measurements, notes, and digital survey data.
Drive survey stakes, hubs, lath, and other survey markers as directed.
Assist with locating property corners, monuments, utilities, easements, and right-of-way features.
Verify field measurements for accuracy and completeness.
Assist with construction staking for roadways, drainage systems, utilities, buildings, and subdivisions.
Follow all safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
Support the Survey Crew Lead in verifying construction layout against approved plans.
Load and unload survey equipment and supplies daily.
Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of surveying equipment.
Maintain assigned survey vehicles in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Valid Texas Driver License with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to travel throughout South Texas.
- Ability to safely operate company vehicles.
- Previous surveying or construction experience preferred but not required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position operates primarily in an outdoor field environment at construction sites, undeveloped properties, roadways, and other project locations while utilizing survey equipment, company vehicles. While performing the essential duties of this position, the employee may be required to:
- Walk long distances across uneven terrain.
- Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Work in high temperatures and humid South Texas weather.
- Stand for extended periods.
- Assist in setting up, operating, transporting, and maintaining surveying instruments.
- Clear brush and vegetation to establish survey lines.
- Bend, kneel, climb, and work around construction sites.
- Occasionally work extended hours to meet project deadlines
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The Survey Instrument Technician primarily works outdoors at active construction sites, roadways, subdivisions, commercial developments, and undeveloped land. The position regularly involves exposure to uneven terrain, moving construction equipment, traffic, dust, mud, insects, vegetation, and changing weather conditions.
