On Time Fab is one of the premier custom metal fabricators in Western KY. We work directly with industrial customers to supply them with custom metal parts and with building components for projects involving stairs, platforms, rails, and more. We also have established relationships with the major general contractors in the region, enabling us to work on larger, commercial projects such as distribution centers, water treatment plants, and similar construction projects.
The Designer and Estimator reports to the Customer Relationship Manager. The right candidate will have significant experience in AutoDesk Inventor, as well as knowledge of generating shop fabrication packages that include isometric drawings, part design details, fabrication instructions, and creating nesting programs for automated equipment. The ideal candidate will also be able to interpret customer drawings in order to estimate materials and labor hours required to complete a project. Core Competencies:
- Strong CAD proficiency, especially AutoDesk Inventor
- Can interpret fabrication, structural, mechanical, and general contractor drawings
- Solid understanding of fabrication methods, equipment, and production workflow
- Demonstrated skill taking field measurements and verifying information at work sites
- Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously
- Strong attention to detail balanced with efficient work practices to get things done with quality and efficiency
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
- Proficient with Microsoft Office suite (especially Excel) and general office software and computing
Minimum Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience using AutoDesk Inventor to create 3D models and detail drawings for metal fabrications, steel structures, or similar metal-based projects
- 3+ years of experience doing drafting and design work with a metal fabricator, steel contractor, or similar construction industry
- Experience with programming CNC machines
- High school diploma required. Related associate or bachelor’s degree is highly preferred
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and in project portfolio management systems
Job Duties include but are not limited to:
Use AutoDesk Inventor to generate detailed fabrication models and drawings
- Use the 3D model to create cut lists and nesting programs required to fabricate parts in the shop
- Develop bills of material to work with procurement to order proper materials for each project
- Review customer drawings and design inputs, asking any questions necessary to develop a comprehensive design and model
- Go to job site when necessary to take field measurements before finalizing designs and drawings
- Ensure proper revision control is documented and that changes and updates are communicated to the shop and field
- Use proper building codes and regulations to ensure that all our fabrications will pass inspection
Assist with ordering materials
- Gather multiple estimates for larger projects
- Define which materials will be purchased from each vendor
- Provide buyer with list and required material delivery dates
- Coordinate with shop manager to ensure that shop schedule and material delivery schedules are aligned
Coordinate projects with shop and field teams
- Take part in shop scheduling meetings to ensure that design times and material delivery times are properly scheduled as part of the project timeline
- Provide completed shop fabrication package and answer any questions from shop team
- Build field installation package where applicable and take part in the project kickoff meeting to address questions from field team
- Be available as a resource to shop and field teams to address questions or obstacles
Generate project estimates and bids
- Interpret RFQs, customer drawings, specifications, and design requests to compile a full list of requirements and the project scope
- Use the company estimation process to define the inputs required to complete each proposed project: materials, hardware, labor hours by process step, rented equipment, and internally provided equipment for the field.
- Translate the overall fabrication project into the process steps required. Then determine how many labor hours per process step will be needed to complete the project.
- Experience with fabrication is necessary to perform this labor analysis
- Determine if subcontractors will be required and then define their scope and get quotes
- Reach out to material vendors to get quotes for required materials and hardware
