General Duties:
Education Instructors will participate in Living History programs, unique learning experiences which allow elementary school students to step back in time and become fully immersed in the history they are studying in the classroom.
On a Living History program, you will engage students through interactive, hands-on activities as they embark on dockside "voyages of the imagination" into the 18th and 19th centuries. You will wear period appropriate attire and play the role of a sailor while working with program participants.
In addition to Living History, Education Instructors will lead tours of our vessels, participate in off-the-dock sailing programs with the assistance of our sail crew, and more. To learn more about all MMSD educational programming, visit sdmaritime.org/education.
Position Requirements:
Chosen candidates must submit a Live Scan as a condition of employment.
Must be able to bend, stoop, and stand for prolonged periods and lift up to 50 pounds unassisted. Ability to convey historical, technical, and scientific information in an engaging fashion while adhering to provided curriculum and institutional practices.
Experience with classroom education, cooking, theatre, and sailing are a plus but not required.
Hours and compensation:
Approximately 10-30 hours per week (varies week to week). This is a seasonal position that mirrors the traditional school year of September to June. Compensation starts at $19/hour with opportunity for increases.
